HARVONI COMPLETION
« on: March 11, 2015, 03:04:50 pm »
Hello all,
New to this site and wanted to share my information with all of those taking the Harvoni medication. Just completed a 16 week treatment. It was going to be a 24 week protocol- but my nys obamacare health insurer decide to pull the plug on my last two bottles -due to that fact my fibrosis score dropped nearly by half after 3 months on the drug. I contracted the disease 35 years ago while on a student exchange in Mexico from shaving with a used razor blade. I am treatment- experienced, having done a 48 week protocol of interferon /ribrovirin in 2003. I cleared the virus with that treatment for nearly 9 months, only to have it come back on me 3 months post-treatment. Hopefully that does not happen again. I would have preferred to take the Harvoni for the full 24 weeks , like my doctor wanted , but the insurance exchanges are penny-wise and dollar foolish with their policy regarding this medication and treatment. If anyone has completed the 12 week regimen of Harvoni and is treatment experienced I would be interested in how things have worked out for you. Thanks, Jack

I was prescribed a 12 week Rx of Harvoni. Dr. requested additional 12 weeks at my request and it was approved.
I had been insured through my Wife's insurance until she lost her job. I decided to go with COBRA for a period of time. The expense of COBRA became too hard to manage. I contacted Support path and told them I was going to have to drop the COBRA due to expense. Gilead said they would cover the full cost of my remaining 12 weeks. They implied they would have covered it also if insurance wouldn't. It is very much in Gilead's best interest for successful outcomes on their medications. I would absolutely contact them TODAY.

Hi Sam, what was your reason for requesting the additional 12 weeks being previously non treated?

Are you still on treatment now?

Are you und?

Thanks,   I'm on week 3 with a similar condition as you.  Going 12 weeks...

Completed a 4 month harvoni treatment on 2/19. Undetectable at 4 weeks EOT. PCR is now detected but <15 @ 13 weeks EOT. Has anybody experienced this with their EOT bloodwork at 12 weeks or beyond?. My nyc gastro says they are seeing this in thier patients after Harvoni and it usually resolves back to undectable as it was for me at 4weeks EOT.. dr says Repeat quanitative pcr test again 1-2 months from now

There is speculation going on about this situation in the medical community to say the least! Some are beginning to suspect that having HCV antibodies can play a role in whether or not you relapse. So there must be some level of immunity afforded by having them.

I look at it this way, I can't pull my liver out and assay it for virus so I have to trust that if there are any infected cells happening post treatment that my immune system will completely remove any virons they spill into the blood stream them before they can cycle back and infect other liver cells. Harvoni tx for most who have cirrhosis will reduce inflammation in the liver and thus promote better immune cell production, so even if Harvoni does not completely block the ability of the virus to replicate perhaps like with interferon/rib it greatly depends upon how well our immune system deals with any virus that manages to evade the drug and re-infect liver cell.

Here is hoping your next test is UND
All the best from a Canuck

There is some discussion that the<15 detected is the test picking up dead virus cells, a false positive. If you were reinfected it seems you'd have much higher numbers since viral load increases exponentially.

I agree, Atomic. Let's not forget that the Gilead standard for success in the trials was a viral load of < 25 achieved at 12 wks post treatment.. No mention was made of detected or not detected; just a viral load < their test's LLOQ.
