Children Living With Hepatitis C

Did you know that approximately 4000 children in the U.S. contract hepatitis C from their mothers every year? An estimated 6% of infants with HCV-positive mothers will acquire the virus perinatally. This amounts to roughly 23,000 to 46,000 children in the US currently living with HCV.

However, liver disease experts admit that little is known about the pathophysiology of hep C in infants and children. With no mention of the newest HCV treatments, the guidelines for pediatric hepatitis C treatment are outdated.

Generally, HCV progression in children is not as severe or as rapid as it is in adults. Nonetheless, it is still quite serious: There is a 26-fold increased risk of liver-related death associated with chronic HCV acquired in childhood. Cognitive impairment has also been observed in children with HCV. This includes developmental delay, learning disorders, and cognitive deficits.

I can't think of a sadder thing, than a little kid infected with this pernicious virus!

Thank God for these new medications and the hope that every little kid can be cured, and free from growing up with HCV.

Has anyone heard of children or adolescents being treated with Harvoni yet?

Will the insurance deny treatment because of low fibrosis scores?
