Ribavirin Levels
« on: August 15, 2015, 04:34:16 pm »
I have noticed a few on here that have had their riba levels tested and were found to have too much in the blood stream.

Has anyone else ever had this test??

thanks,
dm

Me. The test I had was developed at my treating hospital here in Australia.

Thanks Phili,

Wonder if they do this test in the U.S.   Anyone?

I hate this one size fits all (or should I say two sizes fits all).  If they could measure the level of riba in your blood stream , then they could tailor your meds to maintain the proper blood levels.   Too much to ask I suppose.

There's an article floating around that basically states your Ribavirin dose should be tied to your GFR (rate of toxin clearance by your kidneys as far as I know) and not necessarily to your weight.

Hyping you up...

I mean I don't want to be an ass, but really, if that's the side effect you're complaining about enough to start wanting tests, you've got too much time on your hands.

Just relax, take a breather, go take a day off relax by the pool in the shade, have a smoothie and watch the nice birdies.

RBV caused all sorts of sx for me, from rampaging bilirubin levels to hb levels where I could hardly walk up a flight of stairs. My renal markers were all over the shop and we had no idea what was going on until among a battery of tests we discovered that I absorbed RBV far too well and had a much higher concentration in my bloodstream than was necessary as a therapeutic level.

They immediately dropped my rbv dosage and it must still be working pretty well because I am still anaemic, in fact more anaemic now than at any other point in my treatment. But I have 3 weeks left and I think I'm just going to tough it out.

That's quite a difference from drummerman's "way too hyped". Of course, you needed to check that out.

But even all that can be prevented if you just do a blood test every 2 weeks to keep an eye on the hemoglobin.

Keeping an eye on my hb with two weekly blood tests might deal with the hb, but my creat., e-GFR, albumin, conjugated and unconjugated bilirubin were all crazy. As well as my HB, most of my red cell indices and one or two other things as well that I cant remember now. Once I dropped the rbv down everything settled down.
