Title: Diet for Hep C cirrhosis
Post by: Nisha on November 27, 2013, 04:06:02 pm
My husband has advanced cirrhosis secondary to Hep C and his doctor said "give him a high protein diet and no carbohydrates ... no spaghetti or fruit juice."  We were walking out the door when he said this and I failed to ask for further instructions since I figured I could look it up on line when we got home.  I can't find anything about high protein-no carb diets except the Atkins Diet which causes ketosis and is very hard on the kidneys.  I'm at a loss ... has anyone else gotten diet instructions from their docs?  This MD is an assistant prof. at Baylor Clinic Liver Center in the Houston Medical Center so he is no dummy; just a lousy, lousy communicator!  Help?  Thank you!

This is a sticky situation. Some docs recommend the high protein diet, some don't. Here is what everyone agrees on: Low sodium, low sugar, and good quality protein. Too much protein is dangerous. Since he is with a good liver center, I suggest he requests a referral to a nutritionist - most liver transplant centers have them, and I bet Baylor does.

Hi,
My name is Jo and I live in Luton, near London, UK.
I have just bought a cookery book especially for Hep C. Its from the USA.
"The Hepatitis C cookbook" by Heather Jeanne.
Basically low fat, low sugar, no red meat. Turkey and salmon are very good, distilled water-lots of it. No processed food. No alcohol. Add lemon to your water daily. Lots of greens, veg and fruit. Bio cultures yogurt is very good. microhydrin is a powerful anti-oxidant and helps to protect the liver from free radicals.
Hope that helps
Jo x

There seems to be so much conflicting information out there....one I read today said that raw vegetables like lettuce, carrots etc. can be hard for liver to process. And I was enjoying salads with homemade vinaigrette dressing.
