Title: Children of hep c patients
Post by: Patty8931 on June 15, 2014, 04:08:05 pm
I was diagnosed in 1992 after I had my children. I have genotype 1. Will be starting treatment with Sovaldi and Olysio after insurance approval. Understand it may cure. But what about my children? Didn't they get hep c when I gave birth?

Hey there, I don't often answer new people but I don't want u to worry too much.  Your children need to be tested but I believe the chance of passing it to your child from giving birth are very low.  I contracted it before I had kids and they both tested negative.  Best of luck to you and yours.

The likelihood for a vertical transfer is low, recent figures have it around 4-5%
My mother had HCV Genotype 1a prior to my birth, my mother was in labor for a great deal of time before a c-section brought me into the world. She had no idea at the time that i would contract HCV from her, nor even that she had it. My brother is perfectly healthy. A cousin of mine with HCV Genotype 1 has two healthy kids.

It's a risk, but when she looks back at the circumstances with regret i simply remind her I'd prefer to have been born than not.
