Title: This surprises me.

I didn't know there was any link whatsoever between the two diseases. Why would that be? Could someone explain this?

Some people are coinfected with both diseases because they were exposed to both. For example, some people who received blood transfusions or clotting factors in the 1980s were exposed to both viruses. The viruses are completely different, and not otherwise connected.

One of the Hep bloggers, Joe Burke has an amazing story about being coinfected. http://blogs.hepmag.com/joeburke/ (http://blogs.hepmag.com/joeburke/)

Patsy, I re-posted this link from another member.  It seems to be a mostly guy thing.
