Title: Antibiotic use in people with cirrhosis
Post by: straycat on January 04, 2015, 08:52:49 am
I have 'googled' myself cross-eyed and can't find what I'm looking for.  I have a UTI and am trying to find out which antibiotics are safe for me since I have cirrhosis.  Of course I'm going to my doc on Monday, but my PCP sometimes misses the finer points.

On a broader note, it might be helpful if someone could speak in general about the use of antibiotics for us heppers, since some of them can apparently cause some serious trouble.

Hi StrayCat,

I have normally been given Cipro when I have had a UTI and the OTC pills that help the burning: Phenazopyridine Hydrochloride also known as Pyridium

I would check them all in the chart Lucinda shared.

Meanwhile, cranberry juice, tons of water, apple cider vinegar in a salad, cucumbers, blueberries, perhaps even yogurt with probiotics.

Feel better!

Thanks for your reply Mel.  The chart you referred me to is excellent, but it shows drug interactions that may occur with the use of hep tx drugs, not a general chart of what's safe for heppers to take for the other little 'grains of sand' that get in our shoes.  I thought maybe somewhere there was a site that dealt with pharmacy issues of heppers.

I can call the pharmacy before leaving the office.  I can also ask the doc questions about the med and if a dose reduction is needed.   I can also request Cipro  ;)

I'm hitting the cranberry supplements and drinking water; I have blueberries every day at breakfast and yogurt in the afternoon; I take a probiotic.  Let me dig out my apple cider vinegar!

Hi Straycat,

We aren't supposed to take anything although some things are worse than others! I've even heard many negative things regarding homeopathic supplements and herbs. I guess we have to think of it this way, anything we put in our bodies our liver will filter.  So the question becomes what do we want to have our liver filter when it's cirrhotic or infected?

I just found this link: http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ijh/2011/519526/ (http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ijh/2011/519526/)

Are you not on treatment or are you SVR?

It appears that anything in the Penicillin family is most "liver friendly"

I have compensated cirrhosis; have been stable for 16 yrs.  My hep doc wants me to start Harvoni and I probably will very soon.  I used to know my viral load but have forgotten; I'll add it to my sig line when I find out.  I remember doc saying 'moderate' amt of virus circulating.  Congrats on your results!

I take very good care of myself and am really cautious before taking any meds.  I take no herbal supplements at all because I have allergies to plants and would hate to be surprised by a reaction from one of the medicinal herbs!  That's why I wanted to know about the antibiotics.

Your link http://www.sinomedresearch.org/hcv/articles/c17_ABX.htm was helpful - thanks!

Update:  Went to my PCP, got Cipro (which is one of the drugs that doesn't even need a dose adjustment for people w/cirrhosis) and am now feeling much better  :)  The first dose caused shaking chills lasting about half an hour but now I feel just a little dizzy.  I'm eating lots of yogurt and taking my probiotic to ward off any hint of a yeast infection, and resting a lot.

Thanks Mel for your interest!
