Title: I May Get Dentures / Tylenol OK?
Post by: Lukey on September 10, 2015, 04:33:32 am
Is getting dentures a really bad thing? I may resort to them. I have about 18 non metal fillings in 25 teeth. My teeth are worn down from years of grinding them at night. I now wear a Stress guard to bed each night. I got rid of my 2 root canal teeth last Winter but now my bite has changed and my dentist referred me to a dental specialist that wanted to do $17,000 worth of work, which I cannot afford. Dentures seems like a best option.

If I get them, is it OK if I take small amounts of Tylenol for a day or two to help with pain? How much Tylenol or other pain stuff can I safely take with Hep ?

Thank you.

Joe

Hi, Joe --

Sorry you've got to deal with another medical problem, but Tylenol should be fine. Hep Forums moderator Lucinda Porter, RN has written a great blog post that answers your question: http://blogs.hepmag.com/lucindakporter/2014/12/harvoni_and_headache_1.html

Before you go the dentures route, check whether the dentist thinks you'll still be able to get good-fitting dentures when you're in your eighties and nineties. If the answer is No, do you live within driving distance of a dental school? If so, you might be able to get the suggested dental work done for much less than $17,000, and the student dentist will be under excellent supervision.

Hi Joe,

You can take Tylenol; but should stay under 2000 mg per day.

Narcotic analgesics would also be fine (no correlation or links to liver damage). Given the amount of dental work you are going to have, I doubt Tylenol will even touch the pain.

I would probably ask for Vicodin 7.5/500 or Percocet 5/350.

Best wishes, Mike

Hi Joe,

I feel your pain as I have struggled with dental issues for a long time.  I have also read that Hep-C and liver issues might be part of the problem systemically.  Implants are ridiculously expensive.  I had one fail recently too.  Anyway...when I have to take something for bad pain like dental surgery, I get (request) vicaprophin...it is hydrocodone/Ibuprophin.  So the nsaid is not Tylenol.  Some folks have an issue with Ibuprophin, but as for the liver concerns it is less harmful.  There are also plain narcotic's without nsaid's.  Anyway, the bad pain is only for a few days.  Follow Gnatty's link, she always has good one's.  Best of luck...beto

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I thought anyone could get dentures and if needed, can get a post implanted (one on each side) which holds the dentures in place. The endodontist wanted me to go to get implants at some other specialist for $1900. I just hope I don't need that. Some dentists are greedy, I really believe that.

Joe, thanks for letting me know you can get a hybrid of dentures and implanted posts. My mother had so little bone left inside her gums, either her options were unusually limited or there's been progress in dentistry since she looked into things. It sounds like you've gotten lots of good ideas for pain relief -- best wishes with whatever you decide.
