Title: Who's your most influential warrior? For fun or serious inspiration!
Post by: Else on September 20, 2015, 01:12:31 pm
So as I posted elsewhere, I've met quite of few warriors on this site - Beatrix Kiddo and Frodo to name but two.  (I hope I have the Frodo right  :o  I never watched The Lord of The Rings trilogy).

Who is the most inspirational character or real-life person that you think of during your treatment/battle with HCV.  (Kudos to the zen-like folks out there who view treatment as a gentle process.  That's fine too!  :) )

Hmmm.  Swords has me thinking.

Byebye,
Barking mad is a good place to be while you txing. Its too easy to let the tx over take you and overwhelm you.

Have you done the glacier cruise? Have you lived in Alaska all your life?

You're in Droughtlander too. My deepest sympathies to you. I know how it feels.  :'(

Yes the waiting is horrible and rude. Cal :o

Hey Cal,

Just joking about the barkin mad :) I'm actually having a great day! Woo hoo!

I've done the glacier ferry :D I lived in Cordova, Alaska, which is in Prince William Sound, lots of glaciers, for a few years, the most beautiful place I've seen and I've done my share of world traveling, before moving to SouthCentral Alaska for the last 20. I'm actually from Utah. I had considerable wanderlust when I was in my twenties. So, North to Alaska!, I said :) Love it here! I DO and have always wanted to visit Oz! Bucket list!

It's just not nice for Starz to hold out on us! Till 2016!!! Ouch :(

Hey Byebyec,
North yo Alaska! I shall look for Cordova on the map. I have been looking up several forumers places where they live. So interesting to me. Yes Australia you would love. Not beautiful like Alaska or Outlanders Scottish highlands. I've been to Scotland and in my world travels, thought it the most beautiful country in. The world. 2016 isn't too far away. Waiting is though!  :'(
Glad your not barking mad. You coping ok so far? I was ill from previous tx in 2011, so that's why I am having a harder time. Not complaining, hoping these pesky sweats and weakness etc will be HCV related and how. I am hopeful. Cal :)

I like the show Outlander myself. I also like The Leftovers and really liked Board Walk Empire. My favorite show had to be the Starz series Spartacus.

If I had to choose a character, it would be Spartacus; for obvious reasons. A person forced in to slavery, made to fight, in the arena, as a gladiator, who went on to escape and free other slaves that he used to create an army that took on the might of Rome. What I really like about Spartacus is that he isn't a fictional character.

The story also seems to parallel ours with the virus being Rome and Spartacus and his army being us fighting to be free of it.

I love all the characters... but esp. Jonah, so much the trouble maker, but deep down a really good heart.

I have it on streaming from Amazon.  Wish they would do a season 2.  Guess it was just toooo politically incorrect.

But as  a teacher,  I can tell you, it was dead on accurate.  Hilarious.

Hi DM,
You're right Jonah had a good heart deep down. Haha I asked a Drama teacher friend of mine if he was watching it when it first came out and he said the same thing, it's like going to work, no thanks!
He made a series with just Ja'ame and also one with other characters but it wasn't as funny as Summer Heights High. He won so many awards for it, writing, directing, starring. All the other comedians were complaining that you couldn't beat him, he did everything and all the characters as well. Cal

I've been on Harvoni for 7 days now, Cal.  The battle was getting the meds.  Frankly, treatment so far as been awesome.  No sides except a slight euphoria that lasts about an hour.  Symptom of decades-long HepC infection already slowly slipping away.  I did not expect this so can't really attribute it to the power of positive thinking.  It's unbelievable.  8)

Liley is a genius.  I did not see the Ja'ame series.  Will for look for it.  Gotta be pretty good even if its half as funny as the original series .

I do a lot of musical theater performance and Mr. G  is like a conglomerate of every drama teacher/director I have ever worked with.  Too funny.

For serious inspiration  probably Robert E. Lee of the Civil War or King Leonidas of Sparta. Fighting for the sake of their country, honor , and belief in doing what is right. ( Before anyone starts talking politics, read up on what Lee stood for and why he chose the Confederacy before casting judgement & over reacting to the topic ) In spite of insurmountable odds they continued to fight to the bitter end!
As far as the forums go----- That would be Gnatty hands down!!!! If I need to explain , all You have to do is check Her never ending, on the spot posts that pervade the forums. Need a hand finding something, a kind word, tech research, A good laugh, a pat on the back???? I will bet a dollar to a donut she will be one of the first ones on the scene.
Not to take away from others who are too numerous to name much less remember them all. To Name a few Lucinda , Lynn , Kim , Cal , Philadelphia , Beto----ETC. ETC. But I digress. You are all inspirational to Me, That is all that matters. Let us not forget the ones who fought before us, Many were wounded and many did not make it. I believe Lynn said it best_____ I stand on the shoulders of Giants!!! Enough for now,

THE EDUCATION OF A MAN IS NEVER COMPLETED UNTIL HE DIES!!!

Prometheus for his endurance

As the ancient legend tells, the immortal Prometheus - after having provided fledgling humanity with fire - was punished by the god Zeus who commanded Prometheus be tied to a rock on top of a mountain where an eagle would feast on his liver each day. Yet, due to his immortality, each night when the eagle flew away, the Titan's liver regenerated only to be devoured again come sunrise.

This punishment would go on until the laboring Hercules slew the eagle and freed Prometheus from his torment.

Another literary reference to the warrior that is in all of us.  This is a poem by Robert Service:

When you're lost in the Wild, and you're scared as a child,
And Death looks you bang in the eye,
And you're sore as a boil, it’s according to Hoyle
To cock your revolver and . . . die.
But the Code of a Man says: "Fight all you can,"
And self-dissolution is barred.
In hunger and woe, oh, it’s easy to blow . . .
It’s the hell-served-for-breakfast that’s hard.

"You're sick of the game!" Well, now that’s a shame.
You're young and you're brave and you're bright.
"You've had a raw deal!" I know — but don't squeal,
Buck up, do your damnedest, and fight.
It’s the plugging away that will win you the day,
So don't be a piker, old pard!
Just draw on your grit, it’s so easy to quit.
It’s the keeping-your chin-up that’s hard.

It’s easy to cry that you're beaten — and die;
It’s easy to crawfish and crawl;
But to fight and to fight when hope’s out of sight —
Why that’s the best game of them all!
And though you come out of each gruelling bout,
All broken and battered and scarred,
Just have one more try — it’s dead easy to die,
It’s the keeping-on-living that’s hard.

Hope your education includes a few of my favorite poets:

Robert Frost (in keeping with the theme of inspiration - "The Road Not Taken")
Ogden Nash (a lighthearted poem that could be describing the Harvoni high - "No Doctors Today, Thank You")

My extended list of New England poets may not exactly relate to Australia....I would also like to claim Edward Lear for his uplifting nonsense but, alas, he is British.
Title: Re: Who's your most influential warrior? For fun or serious inspiration!
Post by: Cal on September 24, 2015, 04:25:35 pm
Sorry you can't claim Lear Corey!
My favourite poets are Keats, Browning, Wordsworth, of course Shakespeare sonnets, especially the Dark Lady. Australian poets Judith Wright and Cath Walker.

Yes you are educating me. I read the poets you recommend. As you can guess I love poetry, as do you. The road not taken is an old favourite. Coincidentally, my son did that poet Frost, in English at senior school last year.
I just read No Doctors Today, Nash is a comical genius.   Cal :)

Amazing that the Greeks were aware of the regenerative properties of the liver.
"The liver is the only human internal organ capable of natural regeneration of lost tissue; as little as 25% of a liver can regenerate into a whole liver."
