Hi,
I have just had a negative RAPID ANTIGEN Hepatitis B test after just under 4 months.
One day before that I took a lab test for hepatitis b, for which I get the results on Monday.
I understand that the sensitivity of rapid tests is 99%. I am hoping that the 1% it misses is due to very low virus, which would mean that the infection is about to resolve. Would this be correct logic?
Is there any chance of the lab test being positive?
I am trying not to worry

You said that " test after just under 4 months." Did you have a possible exposure followed by hep B symptoms?

I had a regretful exposure with condom break half way through for about a minute in Thailand whilst on dental visit.
I have had no symptoms apart from anxiety, and took a rapid test to try to calm my nerves whilst waiting for lab tests

Hep B is usually highly symptomatic if you contract it at your age, so it sounds like you are likely OK as far as hep B is concerned. I assume you have been tested for HIV. You didn't say anything about gender, so if you are a man having sex with a man, you may also want to check for hep C. Also, I assume the dental visit met high standards of infection control.
May I suggest a hep B vaccine ASAP?

Hi, Thanks so much for your reply. I have no worries about HIV as I have already been conclusively tested. the only information i could find about symptoms was 'around 50%'.

Also it was heterosexual sex, and I have already had a rapid test for Hep C and waiting for lab test results.

Chances are pretty much zero for contracting hep C under those conditions, so looks like you are safe. The hep B vaccine is highly recommended. You could get it with the hep A vaccine in the same series.

Hi yes - its Hepatitis B that I am particularly worried about, because it is much easier to catch and worried about false negative from rapid test. I haven't managed to get any figures on risk per act. I am very scared and haven't slept for days but its all my own fault

Yes I will certainly get a vaccine if I get through this ordeal. The wait for the lab results is unbearable and what I have to lose if they are positive.

I have been thinking about how ignorant of hepatitis I have been and if I can somehow get through this I will help make sure others don't make my mistakes and have to go through the hell of waiting and testing for four months

I assume you are saying that the chances of Hep c are zero but certainly not Hep B

Correct - your chances of contracting HCV from an HCV+ person under the circumstances you explained were nearly zero. If the person had HBV, the chances of contracting it would have been high. The fact that you didn't have hep B symptoms, coupled with the rapid results points to you being clear.
And good for you for using this as an opportunity to inform others.

Thanks for replying - its so good of you to take the time to help others like myself in distress. I will be grateful to you whatever happens and will try to let you know what happens.
I find that exercise helps with the depression but its so hard to motivate yourself, and for short term relief putting a pen in your mouth for a minute to falsely induce a smile whilst holding back the skin of the forehead (kinesiology).
the highlight of the day is when I take my sleeping tablet which I try to put off as long as possible! Also taking propranolol for anxiety three times a day but I have no motivation for anything. I can cope with rapid testing (just about) but its the wait and wait for lab results which is killing.
I went through such distress in ruling out HIV only to discover about Hep B and C. I thought I was vacinated against hep A but discovered it was only Hep A

Anxiety and depression are tough to deal with - it's taken me many years to work these issues out, but sound to me that you are on the right track.

just got my lab results back - all negative! I am so relieved. Thanks so much for your support - you are doing a great job helping others.
My anxiety has vanished but strangely my body still feels depressed - guess it will take time to recover after 4 months
