Title: The True U.S. Hepatitis C Prevalence
Post by: Hep Editors on December 02, 2015, 12:47:22 pm
Current estimates of U.S. hepatitis C prevalence do not include the following populations: People who are in the military, homeless, in temporary housing, incarcerated, hospitalized or institutionalized. They also do not include people who live on Indian reservations or in a U.S. territory like Puerto Rico. These are all populations that are proven to have a much higher hepatitis C prevalence than average.

Here’s what this means: Current reports (and health care cost analyses) estimate that 3.6 million Americans are  currently living with HCV. However, the real number could be as much as 7 million.

In the latest Hep web exclusive, Lucinda Porter asks: "How are we going to eradicate hep C if we don’t know the size and scope of the problem?" http://www.hepmag.com/articles/hepatitis_c_prevalence_2502_28098.shtml
