Current estimates of U.S. hepatitis C prevalence do not include the following populations: People who are in the military, homeless, in temporary housing, incarcerated, hospitalized or institutionalized. They also do not include people who live on Indian reservations or in a U.S. territory like Puerto Rico. These are all populations that are proven to have a much higher hepatitis C prevalence than average.
Here’s what this means: Current reports (and health care cost analyses) estimate that 3.6 million Americans are currently living with HCV. However, the real number could be as much as 7 million.
