Our panelists will discuss issues of hepatitis health disparities and health equity in Indian Country, including

Tribal efforts to implement syringe exchanges and telemedicine.
The need for opioid substitution therapy and specialty providers.
Screening efforts in jails.
The concept of elimination as the ultimate goal in tribal communities.


Our panelists:
Jessica Leston is a healthcare advocate, clinical improver, technology enthusiast, and IHI Improvement Advisor. She has worked with tribal health services for twelve years and currently serves on the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board.

Dr. Jorge Mera, MD, is the Director of Infectious Diseases for Cherokee Nation Health Services. He is responsible for surveillance, policies, and programs to treat and prevent the transmission of HIV and HCV. Dr. Mera also serves as the Director of the AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC) local performance site (LPS) at Cherokee Nation.

Kris FourStar's experience with hepatitis C is rooted in the Fort Peck reservation in Montana. In 2009, Kris created a needle exchange in Fort Peck in response to the hepatitis C endemic. He worked for the Fort Peck Tribal Health Department for almost eight years, and is well-versed in discussions surrounding the lack of treatment access and harm reduction services in Native American communities.
