Title: Could I have hep C? ( need peace of mind)
Post by: michaelL1994 on September 17, 2016, 06:22:18 pm
I was with someone who had Hep C about 3 years ago. We did have inter-couse. I was tested 3 times for Hep-C and it was around 6 months after the incident. They all came back negative but I read those tests are not always accurate. I had one test in February then in April which turned out to be negative.. I have extreme anxiety so it is hard for me to drop things.

The Incident was in October.

Sexual intercourse is not a common or easy route for Hep C transmission. Couples who have been married 20-30 years and use no barrier protection do not tend to transmit it to their spouses. So that gives you an idea of how difficult it is to transmit sexually. (Unprotected male-to-male intercourse has higher chance of transmission.)

But you know, if the incident happened 3 years ago, you could certainly get tested one final time to ease your anxiety. If a current test comes back negative (and it sounds like it will), then you can forget about having Hep C from that 3-year-old incident. Besides - Hep C is now entirely curable, so it isn't the end of the world if you ever do contract it from this point forward.

good luck! :)

Hi Kim,

I have had 3 negative tests? Do I really need more?

Hi Kim,

Michael

It depends on your level of anxiety. ;) If I understood you, you were saying that your 3 negative tests all came around 6 months after the incident, and you wondered if that would be enough time for Hep C antibodies to be present in your blood. I can say for certain that 3 years is enough time for those antibodies to develop.

But really, it's up to you whether to test again or not. It's a minor test.

best,
kim

Additional testing is not needed your doctor has likely told you that.

Testing 6 months after a concerning incident is definitive.

The only reason to have additional testing would be to further convince yourself you do not have hep c

Best of luck to you
