Title: Ladies, a question about Mavyret and taking birth control at the same time.
Post by: whitelotus51 on April 01, 2019, 02:56:04 pm
Does anyone take Mavyret and the birth control pill? On the Mavyret website it says not to take a combination birth control pill while on Mavyret because of the estrogen. It says the estrogen can increase ALT liver enzyme levels. Any opinions on this? I called my specialty pharmacy as well and talked to a pharmacist. They advised against it, but then I talked to another pharmacist and they said it's fine, so I'm a bit confused. Is it better just to take a progestin only pill? I haven't started birth control yet but will be this week. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Personally I would suggest speaking with your doctor. What works for someone else may not be the best idea for you.

I agree with Lynn. I find the safety info lacking - maybe also a pharmacist. They clearly state it is recommended to not co-administer Mavyret with ethinyl estradiol-containing
medications, but the rest of the literature doesn't mention it, such as in the patient info. By co-administer, do they mean simultaneously or not at all?

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I am stumped. Please let us know what you discover.

Thanks for the replies ladies. Yeah, it seems to be confusing. I had called my gastro doc today actually and they transferred me to the medical assistant. I asked all the same questions and she said "call the pharmacy who gave you the prescription". Which I have already done twice and talked to 2 separate pharmacists there like i previously mentioned. I'm actually going to my physician assistant tomorrow to talk about birth control. She works at a gynecology office, so yeah. I wonder if its a big deal anyway if the ALT level is elevated temporary for a few weeks anyway???

My thought is even though it isn’t mentioned on every reference I found I would go with the recommendation unless there is a pressing need to use one of the not recommended types I would go with a preferred type of birth control better to err on the side of caution

Perhaps try the manufacturer's support line? The phone # is listed on their website:https://www.mavyret.com/ (https://www.mavyret.com/)
