Title: Barber shop exposure
Post by: dubsj on July 28, 2019, 03:37:30 am
I know this may be a silly question, however I would like some advise. I got a haircut at a new barber shop I have never been to before. When I got home I noticed a small cut on my forehead. Do I have to be worried about catching hepatitis c from the barbers clippers? I am not sure about the barber shops hygienic practices as I cannot remember if they were cleaned before hand as at the time I was just enjoying my experience. Please let me know :)

Very very very unlikely.
Only about 4% of the US population has hep c.
Barber shops and hair salons if they wish to maintain their licenses use standard hygienic practices.
Getting a cut during a haircut is not a known method of transmission. It is not on the CDC list of modes of transmission.
If hep c were easily contracted many more people would have hep c.
If you continue to have concerns it is a simple matter to have an antibody test. Just wait 12 weeks post a concerning event before testing.
Hep c today is relatively easily treated and curable in most cases so even if you should someday contract hep c you have little to worry about.

If you continue to have concerns maybe you should consider anxiety counseling to improve your quality of life related to concerns about contracting illnesses that are difficult to contract and today very curable.

Hi Lynn,

Thank you for taking the time to write back to me.

I will take your advice and get tested in 12 weeks time to alleviate my anxiety
and go from there.

I appreciate your guidance. :)
