Just had a very good specialist call to inform me that my MRI is clear. There is a serious history of prostate cancer in my family and my younger brother just caught it in time. So as you can well imagine that having a pronounced abnormality show up was not a shock for me but certainly an extra source of concern to say the least. The good thing about having an MRI done all the way up to the liver to rule out any possibility of metastatic cancers happening ruled out a fear that had me sweating bullets again.
If any here are in a similar risk group as I am then having the prostate exam done post HCV treatment is very important. Consulting with the specialist, he said quite specifically that the strain of having had HCV messing with liver functions for years is an unknown factor in whether or not HCV infection can increase the risks for those of us who go on to develop prostate issues late in life. BUT it only stands to reason that having had HCV might increase the risks for those of us who develop prostate cancers.
I have not had a prostate biopsy so I cannot know if the disease is a form of cancer, but statistically a hard swelling of the gland is known to be either a benign form of cancer or it can be metastatic.
All I know is that the relief getting the news that there is no sign of any abnormalities beyond my prostate is one hell of a weight lifted off my mind.
Don't ignore the advice of doctors to have your prostate checked and if there is any sign of abnormalities at all get a PSA and regular testing done.
