prison outbreaks?
« on: July 15, 2013, 12:34:40 am »
Just found out my 49 y.o. son has hepatitis C.  he is incarcerated & has diabetes, & he has been complaining about how poorly the protocal has been regarding cleanliness.  the nurse uses the same rubber gloves to give insulin to many inmates, changing the needle, but not the glove - concern over microscopic bits of blood could be on the glove.  also, uses the same machine to prick the fingers w/o sterilizing it or giving them each their own.  so right now, i don't know if they decided to test him because he complained to them or if there is a mini outbreak there.  does anyone have any suggestions on medical reading i can send him?  how about if he wants to try the sosofosbuvir if he could get it?  i don't even know what to ask.... suggestions for that too!  all your help is so appreciated.

Hi Clarice,

Sorry to hear about your son.

The first step is to find out what genotype of the virus he has and what condition his liver is in.

Here's Hep's lesson on what needs to be done.

Hepatitis C: The Basics - How is it diagnosed, and what tests are used?

Thank you so much. I shall print this all to send him.  Not knowing what to do is scary.
