Next Question!! Hypothydoidism
« on: August 21, 2014, 12:04:05 am »
Ok... Was reading about interferon, and it appears that some people develop hypothyroidism after taking it. Then I read another article that says that "the thyroid is one of the principal target organs for extrahepatic manifestations in HCV infected patients". I have not discussed this with the Doc yet, however 2 months before I was diagnosed with HCV, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and supposedly I will be on meds the rest of my life. So, I am guessing there is a relation between the Hep C and my thyroid dysfunction. Does having a bad thyroid exclude you from interferon since there is already a thyroid problem? I listed the meds and condition on the new patient forms, and hope the Doc saw them!

It may or may not be related - there is no way to prove it one way or the other. Hypothyroidism is very common in the U.S. Nearly 5% of people above 12 in the U.S. have it; 10% of adult women have it. The prevalence increases with age, and 10% of those over 65 have it. (I had it before I had hep C).
Hypothyroid is usually easy to control, and once under control, interferon may be used. However, in about 7 weeks, the FDA is expected to approve interferon-free treatment using the ledipasvir/sofosbuvir combo pill, which in clinical trials had the highest response rates and lowest side effect profile for genotype 1 pts.

Thanks for the reply! I was worried that the thyroid might cause a problem with treatment!

I had 1/2 my thyroid removed a couple of years ago and did not have any issues while on treatment. You doctor will monitor your thyroid levels while on treatment.

Please note that some thyroid issues arouse in a few folks taking a 48 (or longer) INTF treatment.

As Lucinda notes, there was not a direct correlation made between being treated for Hep-C and hypothyroidism.

Best wishes, Mike
