Harvoni Also Works Well For Less-Common Geno's 3/6
« on: November 18, 2014, 12:28:26 pm »
Genotype 1 is the most common strain of hep C around the world, with all other genotypes together making up a little more than half of the remaining cases. Genotype 3 is most common in Asian countries. Because of that, drug trials often overlook less common HCV strains, such as genotypes 2, 4, 5 and 6, which are most common in developing nations.

However, a new study shows the latest hep C treatments may work across different genotypes. The trial shows that 12 weeks of Gilead Sciences’ Harvoni (ledipasvir/sofosbuvir) plus ribavirin cured 73-89% of people with genotype 3 of hepatitis C virus.

In addition, 96% of people with genotype 6 were cured without ribavirin.
