Harvoni - wk 2
« on: December 23, 2014, 06:03:33 pm »
I'm on week 2 of Harvoni.  (Diagnosed in 2008, no symptoms, VL under 1M, normal labs, good health overall.). Harvoni side effects have been very mild and have been been pretty easy to deal with.  My energy level is high, no headache, sleep has been good and bad, some gut effects, some night sweats, no brain fog.  Have been drinking water like crazy, and if I don't drink enough I start feeling a bit nauseated and dizzy.  Have had to cut way back on food because I'm not digesting and food frequently causes serious pain.  I take the pill right before I go to bed, and when I wake up I drink some grapefruit juice to knock out the mild. burning (I was told that harvoni likes an acid stomach).  Exercise is helpful.  The worst thing is that I have IBS and it has gone ballistic with lots of intestinal pain.  On balance, so far so good.  I have a high stress job and the drug has not interferred at all.  My doctor did labs when I started, and next labs are in a couple weeks.  I'm on 8 weeks of treatment, so hoping the viral load shows serious progress.

Hi DW and welcome,

I am not so sure about Grapefruit Juice in the mix; I wouldn't touch it while I am on treatment. It interacts with so many medications it's the one juice I completely run from:

I hope your treatment goes well, I deal with IBS as well and it's not fun :(

Mel is right. Grapefruit juice is not our friend while on treatment.

In case you don't know - also be careful of omperazole/prilosec. I have something like IBS also and easily get very nauseaous so it was really hard for me to cut back on the omperazole. My doctor, the hepatologist, told me it is okay if I only take 20 mg but to make sure and take it 12 hours before the meds. I am on S/O though so it may not be applicable to Harvoni.

The omepresol and other similar has to be taken with care or avoided if possible with Harvoni.  I am just taking a tums when I lay down to sleep if I have no other option. I have gerd and a hiatal hernia so this is my least favorite part of treatment can't wait to say in May so long Harvoni and hi Prilosec I have missed you so!

Seen different stuff about drinking grapefruit and I am not sure I would ask my doctors office about that to be sure.

Happy holidays to all
