tracking pharma sales rep influence on doctor Rx decisions
« on: February 09, 2015, 04:09:30 pm »
(Apologies if this is the incorrect Forum category - I wasn't sure which forum to post this in.)

John Oliver has a new video explaining how pharma reps influence doctor Rx decisions:
   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQZ2UeOTO3I  (17 mins)

In that video, he gives the URL for the new gov db which tracks payments from pharma sales reps to doctors:
   https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/

It's quite fascinating to look up your own doctor(s), to perhaps gain insight into their Rx preferences.  For example, I looked up my gastroenterologist and found a half dozen payments from Gilead for very small amounts (< $25), for "food/beverage".   That same doctor received another half dozen small payments from AbbVie, also for "food/beverage".  Of course we can make a pretty good guess what products were discussed during those visits (Harvoni and VieKira).

I looked up a different doctor and found a number of payments for "speaker at a venue".  That one seems a bit more eyebrow-raising, and I will take that into account if that doctor ever recommends a Rx from that particular vendor.

apache,
Wow, never knew we could look that info up!

Looked up my GI, it looks like he likes to eat his meals w/ the Abbvie rep(s).

Thanks for sharing!

Blessings,
