Newbie to forum with severe cirrhosis
« on: February 09, 2015, 12:03:55 pm »
Hi Everyone
My husband has had HCV since most likely 1971 from a bad car crash and subsequent blood transfusion. We found out about 28 years ago but the only choice was interferon, which he refused. We went with a natural choice of milk thistle, yucca and juicing etc. The pain and swelling went away and he did really well until a few years ago. Then suddenly lost 40 lbs and has been very fatigued. He is now running fevers, kidney stones, swollen spleen and has severe cirrhosis. He's just out of the hospital from kidney stones were the finally did some testing. They didn't say anything to us about what the blood work meant. What does 6.8 in the hepC blood test mean? Is that high? We have to wait for over a month to see a GI! I'm scared to death!!! And don't know what to do! He is very sick!!!!
Thanks for your support!!!

Hi Granny

I am going to guess 6.8 is his viral load in the logarithm scale mine is 6.384 while the other number you may see is a number similar to mine 2,422,260 IU/mL or international units per milliliter of blood.

Viral load means little in severity of illness. It is primarily used to gauge treatment response.

The new treatment are much better tolerated and much more effective than the old treatments promising a high rate of eradication of the hep c virus. One medicine your doctor may prescribe is Harvoni which is one pill a day for either 8, 12, or 24 weeks depending on the patient.

Take a breath it will be OK. Just wondering why you say he has severe cirrhosis have you been told his MELD score? I have had cirrhosis for 7 years and have an enlarged spleen as well. I don't have his additional health problems of kidney stones which may or may not be related to his hep c.

Some more information could help us help you more. Do you know his bilirubin, creatinine, albumin and platelet counts. It would be a good idea to get copies of all his lab tests. What kin of symptoms is he having?

Best to you both
Lynn
