Immune system
« on: May 01, 2015, 11:59:13 am »
I'm on day 64 of Harvoni. So far still no discernible side effects and the virus is still "undetected" as of my 6 week blood labs and liver doc visit. Amazing!!
My question is does anyone know if one's immune system is compromised in any way from the Harvoni? It must be some kind of STRONG drug if it's knocking out a previously seemingly difficult virus to eradicate.
Im wondering because I RARELY get sick. No colds. No flu ( no flu shots ) and I'm youthful middle age too so it's not a new thing for me to not be sick. About 4 weeks ago i got a cold. It seemed like it was going away with my coughing subsiding but returned a few days later and way worse so much so that I actually went to the doc and I had bacterial pneumonia. After 2 different doses of antibiotics- and I've taken them maybe 2xs in my life, it all is subsiding. I called the Harvoni pharmacy in Maine- they send me the Harvoni- and immediately they claimed the immune system is not compromised in any way. ... so....
any thoughts or experience would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bb Bob

I had a similar experience as you just before I started taking Harvoni. Head/chest cold blossomed into full blown Pneumonia. It actually delayed my start date by a week as my doctor said to wait until the Pneumonia had subsided before beginning. By the way, I also have kidney disease which predisposes me to Pneumonia.

It is indeed very strong medication, and relatively new, so all of the nuances are probably not fully understood yet. I'm on day 35 and have felt great (knock on wood) throughout treatment. Could just be coincidence...or if you were inactive during your cold and/or from being fatigued from treatment, that could be a factor in acquiring Pneumonia as well.

Good luck on your treatment and beyond.

There are a handful of folks on this forum who have or have had pneumonia after starting Harvoni, but who knows the relationship there. Our immune systems are compromised already from liver disease. I'll be curious down the road to learn if Harvoni is impacting us--lots of folks talk about the Harvoni cough, for example. I have a week to go. Looking forward to being done.

Indeed...some of us suffered through pneumonia or sinusitis--the latter was mine.

Exactly 2 weeks post finishing Harvoni and I feel better today than I have felt in months...truly. I had to make myself rest this evening after doing "stuff" all day for fear of relapsing myself...

Eventually we'll have answers to all these questions. It's the price we pay for wanting/getting treated so early after approval....don't get me wrong. I'm very grateful. I won't know for another 2 weeks if I'm relapsing or not---but still grateful I've had this opportunity to off this thing!

Good luck all with your treatment.  It really does go by in the blink of an eye.
