Harvoni and heartburn and other stuff.
« on: May 15, 2016, 02:21:38 am »
Hi
I'm 52 and onto my last 2 weeks of Harvoni (GT 1b) and have been under the impression that I haven't had any side effects until I read a comment in this forum about Harvoni causing heartburn. I have had heartburn, gastric reflux and a few bouts of pancreatitis for years, and just assumed this was normal me. However, the gastric side effects have been bad some days and frightened me into thinking I was still sick, which seems to have been unnecessary. I wonder why this is a side effect?

I had liver cancer last year treated successfully, cirrhosis, hypoglycaemia, platelets 52 and abnormal INR.

I had not seen heart burn as a side effect. I have a hiatial hernia with GERD and made it through 24 weeks of Harvoni but it was a long ride for my heartburn without my Prilosec. My doctor suggested if I could avoid taking Prilosec I should during treatment.

I assume you are following the protocols about acid reducing medicines and Harvoni like Prilosec at the same time as Harvoni on an empty stomach, for meds like Pepcid or Tagamet at the same time and if needed 12 hours after previous dose /before next dose. And for antacids like tums no closer than 4 hours before or 4 hours after taking Harvoni.

Best of luck to you sounds like you have been through the ringer

I just took my 28th pill of Harvoni, I have had so much heartburn so it does seem to be a side effect.
Hoping it subsides during second and third month of tx.
You are close to the end of treatment.

Yes Lynn I have been taking antacids (not PPIs) 4 hrs after if desperate. My specialist didn't give me the rundown on antacids, luckily I checked on interactions myself. I will be having a fibroscan next thursday so hoping for some good news. Thankyou to both of u for your responses. It would be nice to be able to say I don't have hep c.

I've had a lot of problems with occasional heartburn since starting Harvoni, and I drink a lot of carbonated spring water to manage it. Seems to work pretty well.

Baxter I drink a lot of Pepsi but I doubt it would be as good  for me as carbonated spring water. And I tend to eat more at night while watching tv in bed which wouldn't help :(
