Hi Supermom, congrats! I did 24 weeks of Viekira Pak and ribavirin, I took my last tablet 3 months ago and I go for my 12 week post treatment test tomorrow.

For me, the ribavirin knocked me round the most. It caused me to get quite anaemic and I had to reduce the amount I took. I also found in the first two weeks that my bilirubin shot up to about 6 times what it should be, but it settled back down. I had some nausea and fatigue too.

I found sx slammed me in the 3rd and 4th weeks, but after that things went back to pretty much normal.

I blogged my entire treatment in a fair bit of detail, so if you want to read what various times were like for me, the link is in my sig below.

If possible, you might want to think about putting your genotype, treatment type and duration and any fibrosis score in a sig, just so we stop asking you the same questions. Most people do it to keep a track of how treatment is progressing, too.

Hope all goes well for you, sx will be different for everyone, but if you put one footinfrontoftheother you'll be done in no time.

Welcome, Super mom. Does your doctor's office work with a specialty pharmacy to deliver expensive drugs like Viekira Pak? If so, the specialty pharmacy will probably phone you and tell you when to expect delivery.

I was on Harvoni, not Viekira Pak, but there are lots of Viekirans on these forums. They agree with Philadelphia that the ribavirin can be a challenge -- one side effect (sx) is that people on riba can become extra emotional, including quickly angry, so if you find that happening to you, you might have to explain to your family that it's due to the medicine, and they'll have their regular mom back after this treatment stage is over.

Best of luck to you.

 Super Mom

Happy word you 'now' know

APPROVED!!!!!

Happy word you 'will' know

UNDETECTED!!!!

You have a supportive family, that and the meds is all you need.  Not everyone has a big issue with riba...but, if you do, just know that there were many before you that got through OK, and it will take a sense of humor.  It's a ride and you will be OK.  I look forward to hearing your future posts and all that good news...and the humor that the riba folks deliver to all the threads.  You have this forum and a supportive family AND you are lucky enough to have the cure on its way.  Enjoy.

Super mom, you sound very well prepared. Having a supportive spouse is priceless. You are going into this with a good attitude -- that helps make things go smoothly. I hope some of the Viekirans will find this thread soon -- there are quite a few with great senses of humor who can become wonderful companions along the journey. Every good wish,

Yes proceed is the company that does the meds through abvie. Did your doctor send them the prescription. The way it worked for me is they sent the prescription then proceed called three weeks later and aproved me for theire assisted patient program and its been over a month in all and I got the meds today. They are pretty good about it. If I were you I would call proceed and find out where you are in the process. It helps to stay on top of it cuz sometimes there might be a,lapse in communication and you staying on them could speed it up but I hope you get yours soon and if you need everyone on here is great and you can hmu anytime if u need someone to talk to bout this. Feel free to pm or hmu on facebook. Goodluck my friend

Hi Super Mom and welcome to the forum,
I on the Viekira only but was on the interferon and ribas in 2004(unsuccessful).The biggest thing you can do for yourself right now is relax. You've been approved and the meds are on their way so it's all good. You'll have plenty of time to stress later...um...did I just say that out loud? :) Seriously you're going to be just fine and you're on your way to getting cured. The sx are effecting everyone differently as has been pointed out so until they start don't even give them a thought. There are ways to deal with them so just ask.I haven't had any to speak of,or at least they didn't last long.As Philly said one foot in front of the other.I like the family meeting thing. If they have any questions that you can't answer just ask them here and we'll do our best to get you one. This is a great group of people and we're laughing and crying our way to SVR.You're not alone so join the conga line.Remember that this isn't a forever thing and you will get there.

Oh and never forget the Viekirian motto now that you're one of us:  "We don't take no stuff from no stinking virus." 8)

It sounds like you enjoy BillT's humor every bit as much as I do. As to getting the flu shot, please DO! I got mine during Tx, but before is fine, too. Our RN moderator Lucinda Porter wrote, "I asked three well-known hepatologists if they recommend the flu shot to patients on current hepatitis C treatment, and they all said 'yes.'" That excerpt came from here:
http://blogs.hepmag.com/lucindakporter/2014/09/hepatitis_c_and_flu.html
In this year's post, Lucinda recommends being sure to get enough sleep after you get the shot, to maximize its effectiveness: http://blogs.hepmag.com/lucindakporter/2015/09/hepatitis_c_or_no_he.html

If you have a smart phone, open your App Store or google play and search for the University of Liverpool Hep iChart. Lists many many drug interactions with hc drugs. Useful app.

If you are talking about buprenorphine, it lists a possible interaction - a warning to check cognitive effects and sedation. No mention of drug dose  reduction.
