24 weeks of Harvoni
« on: November 11, 2015, 11:59:23 am »
I would like to offer this as encouragement & inspiration for anyone afflicted with this insidious disease.  The important piece is to not give up hope.  There are even better drugs in the pipeline that will be coming on line in the very near future.

My story.
I was infected with Hepatitis in the 1973 timeframe.  Years later, it was diagnosed as Hep. C..  I saw a Gastroenterologist for many years while he monitored my status.  In 2002, he convinced me to try Peg/Riba.  The treatment did not work and I became dangerously anemic.  He discontiued my trearment.  In the spring of 2014 I began a 12 week course of Solvadi/Olysio.  My liver chemistries were in the normal range. The HCV was undetected the whole time but came back with a vengeance several months after treatment.
On 11/5/2014 my blood work revealed:
AST 164
ALT 163
HCV log10 6.693
Ammonia plasma 221

On 1/27/2015 my blood work revealed:
AST 268
Alt 231
AFP Tumor Marker 477

My Gastro. consulted with several Hepatologists and got several different suggestions.  One wanted me to do a regimen of Harvoni with Riba.  That was out of the question due to my anemia, low platelets, WBC & RBC levels.  My Gastro. submitted a Rx. for a 24 week course of Harvoni.  It was rejected, appealed and the rejection overturned.  On my own, I sought out my own Hepatologist.  Consider this a case of divine intervention but I was able to make an app't. with a world renowned research Hepatologist in Philadelphia.  My 1st consult with him was 2/16/15 and I began the Harvoni on 2/23/15.  I saw him routinely for consults and reviews of tests.  I was undetected throughout treatment, 5 weeks EOT & finally 12 weeks EOT.  My AST is 30, ALT 32 and AFP Tumor Marker now 4.7.

It has been a long journey but I made it.  The point I want to emphasize is to not give up.  Harvoni success rates are unbelievable but they are real.  There are newer more focused drugs in the pipeline for those who may relapse.  Do not give up and place your faith in a higher power.  Good luck to all.
