RIBO RAGE
« on: December 29, 2015, 07:18:36 pm »
I was wondering if anyone has had major rage from their treatment. Solvadi and Ribosphere- the rage and sleepless nights were so bad I had to stop treatment early. While on treatment- I tortured my family so bad - and my in laws that they issues a restraining order. I felt horrible after i calmed down- but went into isolation in fear that I would rage out on people.
My Hep C md made me got to a therapist and psychiatrist during this time but it didnt help.
They also gave me an antipsychotic but nothing seemed to help.
I almost lost my family.. my poor 2.5 year old son - i had to stop taking the medication..

Hi Elizabeth,
I'm sorry to hear how hard the riba hit you.Yes,a lot of people are having problems with the rage.Your's is one of the worst I've heard, but these meds affect us all differently.Just remember it's the drugs and not you. You're definitely not alone though.I did my INF/Riba treatment through the Veterans Admin back in 2004 and they required us to see mental health while we were in treatment.I think you need to talk to your family and just explain what happened, and hopefully they'll understand it wasn't you but the drugs.GL and let us know what happens.

Elizabeth - I have seen the kindest, most soft-spoken people be turned upside down by ribavirin. I am sorry this happened to you. The only thing I know that works for riba-rage is to not take ribavirin. I hope your doc will offer one of the newer ribavirin-free meds, either Harvoni or the new one coming out next year (sovaldi + velpatasvir)

Hi Elizabeth,
Ribavirin is a terrible drug. I think we are only just finding out that a lot of the side effects we blamed on interferon were also riba related.
I had riba rage both txs. My first wasn't as bad as the last one which I finished nearly 3 weeks ago. I finished the riba nearly 7 weeks ago. I was taken off it as it was just ravaging me.
Last tx I ended up in a psych unit with interferon induced agitation. In hindsight the ribas played there part in that hospitalisation as well.
Your rage sounds awful, mine is minor compared to yours. I punched a wall and the kitchen bench and hurt myself.  You probably had a reaction to the ribas and should not have been on them. It is good that you are off them. First do no harm.
The ribas will leave your body. It takes a number of weeks but it goes and you will return to normal.
Having mental health professionals help you with this is mandatory. You have been to hell and back. Keep pushing with the Pysch for help. You may need a higher dose of the anti psychotic.
Is your husband supportive? You must feel terribly alone. I am so sorry for you. Keep posting. Cal

Wow thank you for  sharing your experience as the doctors supposedly don't know enough..but I find that hard to believe..living in boston ...cmon..I wish I had known more not that I wouldn't have taken it but...the damage that has been created in the family seems irreversible as of now..smashed my laptop and cell phone over small misunderstandings...everything seemed so logical at the time..I couldn't or wouldn't listen to anyone talk me down ..I went off medication with *under a month left of treatment. I hope and pray that I remain in cured after all that we (family) has been through.

Elizabeth,
Everything can be repaired with the right kind o help. You must  seek the assistance of a Mental Health Psych of some sort. Perhaps a family therapist too. You all need to feel safe again.
When you say you went off the medication. Did you stay on the Sovaldi? Cal :)

Everything can be repaired but sometimes it takes time. I knew about the rage and talked with my wife about before taking it knowing it was a major possibility. Well I had it really bad!!! I made a post here about it because I was so scared. It's not so bad now but I'm still kinda crazy and angry when before tx I was very very calm.  Sometimes my wife would get mad at me because I would never get angry at anything

The riba rage is real. I'm sorry you had to go through all that and then stop taking it. It does work.
