Harvoni 5 months on
« on: October 13, 2016, 12:33:22 am »
I thought I should let those that are considering Harvoni treatment know the side effects that I have experienced.
Before I get into that I will give you a little background on myself and my hubby. We discovered about 20 years ago that we had Hep C. Possibly contracted through drug use in the 70's.
8 years ago I had 6 months of chemotherapy for Ovarian cancer.
5 years ago I began Interferon & Ribavirin treatment which I endured for about 8 weeks. (Chemotherapy was easier)
My husband earlier this year, (just before Harvoni was placed on the PBS) did a 3 month course of Sofosbuvir along with Simeprevir with little to no side effects. High sun sensitivity and some fatigue but nothing too harsh. He has had the all clear and no longer has Hep C. He says he feels no different from before treatment.
I began my treatment with Harvoni on the 1st June and I ceased taking them yesterday. My specialist recommended that I do 6 months treatment as my liver was in worse shape than my husbands. During the 5 months of taking Harvoni, I have had headaches, fatigue, depression and for the past month quite a lot of aches and pains in my neck and back. (which is why I have decided to not finish the course) I have continued to work but on my days off I have just laid on the couch. After the first month of treatment, blood tests showed my liver readings as normal, hopefully this will be the case in a few months when I go for another blood test.

Sady, given that you endured chemo and Inf/Riba, those aches and pains must have been really brutal! Kudos to you for lasting through 5 bottles. I share your hope that they will have been enough, so that you can join your husband in the cured camp.

Thanks for the well wishes Gnatty! Just 2 days since I stopped taking them and I do feel a lot better. The pains can be managed with painkillers, they certainly are no where near what I endured with chemo, Inf/Riba. The depression and brain fog is a little harder and I think sometimes it's quality of life and not quantity. Not knowing what the long term effects on my body after the other treatments was a major factor in my decision to cut my course short. So I too look forward to being in the cured camp and hopefully recovering and maintaining my health to spend with all my lovely grandchildren.
