I have been asked to do this treatment for 24 weeks and can't get an explanation as to why so long . My nurse said it my be because I was a non responder to interferon or because my VL was 13.5 million but I cleared the virus at 5 weeks anyone else out there in my situation

HEY FINBAR,NO HERE but they say "DR. KNOWS BEST ,, (sorry about that too,that applied in the old days. Ha ha before INTERNET,  now if i wanted i could be a brain surgeon!  ANYONE out there willing to give me a chance?I can guarantee when were all done you will "Rest In Peace" ( hey!that's a good thing, Your treatment will whiz right on by! And then we will have a CURE for ALL  hep c victims,,  i can see it now,, GOT HEP C ,GO SEE WILLIE G, COMES WITH A GUARANTEE!  ""Just" Willie g

Hi Finbar,
Well, there is a slight argument for 24 weeks, if you have stage 3 or more disease in addition to being a non-responder. The problem is that the study results are very small, and we need more data. Going on what we have, it looks like it is a difference between 90% (12 weeks) and 94% (24 weeks. Here is a brief article to read: http://www.hepatitisc.uw.edu/page/treatment/clinical-trials/32

Here is a question I would ask myself, "If I did 12 weeks and then relapsed, would I be kicking myself for not having done 24?"  If the answer is "yes" that I hope you can embrace the long haul. If the answer is "no" then see how you feel at week 12. You may feel so good, that you might want to continue. By then we may have more data.
