how often (bloodwork)
« on: November 07, 2014, 09:19:16 am »
How often should a person get bloodwork done after starting s/o treatment.   Everybody seems to get bloodwork at 2-weeks.  I go in at 4-weeks.  Is there recommendations out their for when bloodwork is needed.   thanks  trapper

Hi again Trapper,

More good questions for your MD... but 2 week is a 'just curious' draw as I understand it, as the 4 week number seems to be what dictates response.  I was drawn at 4 weeks in my last treatment regimen, was UD, and the MD said "you were likely UD at 2 weeks" almost wishing he had checked...  They are trying to judge response by the drop in viral load.  Yours is so high, you need nearly a 7 log drop to be UD - that would be great but good response for you might still show a viral load.  Fingers crossed.  If UD, the expectation is no need for additional quant tests until 90 days post treatment, but they will want to monitor your blood count and liver enzymes anyway, so typically they will do the quant viral load every 4 weeks.  Also, in rare cases the virus has come back after UD perhaps because of resistant mutations.  Looking forward to hearing your results soon.  Good luck!  -jack

Trap,

I am going to tell you what I had at 4 weeks.

Ammonia, Plasma

Cbc With Differential/Platelet

Comp. Metabolic Panel (14)

HCV RT-PCR, Quant (Non-Graph)

Not sure if your doctor will choose the same or different, again the ammonia, plasma was special due to my ammonia being high and some issues I was having with the"fog"

At Vanderbilt University Medical Center and they scheduled my blood work at 8 weeks into a 12 week treatment. This seems late to me, but they are the regional hepatology/transplant center experts, so I guess I'll just have to wait.
Diagnosed 04/2014
Started Harvoni 10/2014
Undetectable 01/2015
Relapsed 04/2015
F4 Cirrhosis (Compensated - barely)
Child Pugh Score 6-7
MELD Score 10
Started Olysio/Sovaldi/Ribavirin (24 weeks)
EOT Not Detected 11/9/2016
--------------------------------
5-10-2017
Virus undetected SVR 24 Achieved
I AM FINALLY CURED!

Hey Johnny,

Does seem a little long to me as well but they must have their reasons and if you are doing well I'm sure it's just the protocol they use. If it really bugs you to wait. You could always ask for one sooner!  Worst they could say is no and I doubt they would especially if you are paying for it with your own insurance.

Wish you the best!
