question... viral load
« on: November 26, 2014, 09:05:12 am »
Half way through 12 weeks of Sovaldi and Ribavirin, type 2.
I Started with a viral load of "log iu/mL 6.48", [considered high].
At 1 week it was "log iu/mL 2.7".
At 4 weeks it is "log iu/mL 1.26".
I wish I knew what these numbers meant. I would like to know the plain number of viruses per millilitre. The doc is not getting back to me.

From what I can tell most people are undetected at 4 weeks. I'm wondering how concerned I should be.

... got the answer,  18 per millilitre. It took a couple of hours but while doing searches I  found the name and phone number of a local liver specialist, at the end of an article, posted on line.
I took a chance and called the number and he answered! This amazing doctor actually took the time to tell me what kind of test the lab here uses [roche/taqman assays] and translate the log # into a plain #.

Hi Petra,
I have a question, does it mean you are still detected? After 6 weeks of a 12 week treatment I would think you should be at undetected. No use continuing this harsh
treatment if the results do show detection. What did the doctor you called say?
I would call your Doctor. I'm completing a 24 week regimen of this combo, at week 3-4 I was undetected. If at week 6 I still had virus in the blood I would have quit.
Just my thought on the situation

That was at week 4.
He said that with less sensitive tests I would have been undetected.

He also said that undetected does not mean no virus.

I know I might be overly sensitive but I posed a question about viral load and the only suggestion was that I quit my meds!!
I started at 3,000,000 per ml and at 4 weeks I was down to 18 per mil.
To keep that in perspective that is a log drop of over 5!

I am at 6 weeks now with 6 to go. Sovaldi and Ribaviron, with normal blood work, just on the low side for hemoglobin. The treatment is not bad... I do get fed up easily but physically just a bit more tired... still working.

It was on this forum that I noticed that most people were "undetected" at 4 weeks, which caused me some concern since at 4 weeks I had a small amount.

Hi Petra,
Sorry I didn't see this earlier, but we are volunteers and not able to get back instantly. Looks like you got your answer from your doc, and it is spot on. Absolutely every reason to feel encouraged and to continue. I had detectable virus at week 6 and made to the cure with 12 weeks of treatment.

Hang in there - you may have some rocky days ahead with ribavirin. You said, perhaps you may be "overly sensitive" - heck no - that is ribavirin-sensitivity. I've been on ribavirin more than once, so let me know if you ever have questions.

Enjoy your success.

Thank you so much for the reply, as rocky as I have felt the last few days I am suddenly THAT much better.

I will sleep well tonight. Wow! Whew... I am almost in tears.

You have made my day!
