Herbal Supplement Crackdown
« on: March 24, 2015, 11:03:18 am »
On February 3, 2015, the New York State Attorney General’s office announced that four major chains (GNC, Target, Walmart, and Walgreens) were selling herbal supplements that could not be verified to contain the labeled substances in the listed ingredients.  Worse yet, many of the substances tested and found were not listed on the labels.

This could be particularly dangerous for people with food allergies or liver problems like hepatitis C.

I saw this on my newsfeed recently, and really didnt know what to make of it.  Is the prudent thing to give up all supplements including multivitamins, etc?  I realize this category doesnt come under FDA regulation and the regs they do come under are very loose.  I would describe the difference thusly:

Drugs are considered UNSAFE until proven otherwise;
Supplements are considered SAFE until proven otherwise.

I found the Hepmag article linked in the opening post to be helpful, but like everything else, buyer beware!
