Working or going to school while taking Harvoni
« on: June 10, 2015, 11:15:35 am »
Hello everyone,
Best wishes to all of you on your journey. Can some of you please share whether or not you worked or went to school while taking Harvoni. I am 47 years old and I am a full time student. I will still be having treatment when my fall semester starts and I am worried about whether or not I am going to be able to do it. Any suggestions on how I can prepare for it. My classes will be from 8 am until 2pm and I will study afterwards. Any suggestions on when I should take my pill? Should I take it before class or wait till afterwards and take it at home? How did you deal with your insomnia? Sleeping pills? Melatonin? I am just not seeing many people discuss work on this forum and I am scared. Thanks for helping. I Genotype 1A  Stage 3 Grade 2 fibrosis.

Hi lolacme

Welcome and best wishes to you also!  tomorrow I will take my last Harvoni. I too worried about how treatment would effect me.  I am happy to say it has been pretty much a breeze.  I work full time, and I have a family. I basically prioritized and did what I could when at home.  Of course at work it was a little different. But I really had no struggles. a headache one time. a little fatigue, and the aches were up and down.  I had good days and bad, but mostly good and the bad weren't really so bad.  Everyone is different.  I was treatment naïve, so I did not run the course of Interferon Ribavirin like so many others here.  Now that is tough!
If I were you I would take the pill after class, while at home just to see how it goes.  Really you could alter a bit later on if you would like. I had no insomnia to speak of and took the Harvoni at 5pm.  I am G1b, and treated for 12 weeks.

Good Luck!  Harvoni is awesome, and I am betting you will get through this just fine.

Thank you for posting this question as it is one of my own.  I was just approved through my insurance and am excited that I can soon begin the treatment but worried as I must continue to work full time without letting the coworkers know

Every one is different. I have 3 weeks remaining, treatment naive and I am not taking ribavirin.

I found that I do well when I:
take my harvoni WITH FOOD at the same time every day
drink plenty of water (I add lemon to mine)
No sodas or caffeine

I have been able to work full time while on Harvoni.

Hello.
I began a 24 week course of Harvoni beginning 2/23/15 and am now in week 17.  I have worked the whole time with very understanding management.  I had my Dr. send all documentation to my company's medical dept. so that it is on file and the side effects are documented.  I drink plenty of water, stay active and am feeling very good.  I was SVR at 4 & 12 weeks.

Chino... just to be accurate, being Undectable at 4 wks and 12 wks ON TREATMENT is not SVR!  The SVR designation applies only to post treatment interval markers... Its great that youre UNDetected on treatment, and a good signal that youre a good responder, but SVR cannot be applied til Post Treatment.. Continued good luck with your labs.

Hi lolacme
I am at 9 weeks of Harvoni and I work full time and have a very long commute to and from work
I have not had any side effects that have caused me to miss any work.  My work doesn't even know and I don't plan on telling them unless they absolutely have to know
I was very worried about the same thing
I take my pill at 8:00 AM on the dot every morning (I set my phone alarm)
I usually eat at about 6:00 AM as soon as I arrive at work so I guess that is a full or semi full stomach ;)  I drink plenty of water throughout the day
On the weekends I still take it at 8:00 AM but on an empty stomach because I don't wake up as early
So far it has been smooth sailing.  I hope it is for you too
Good luck to you and all with your treatment
