Pain meds and Harvoni
« on: September 09, 2015, 10:55:08 pm »
Hi everyone,
I'm new here and am having trouble finding my way around but I'll figure it out.
I've been on opioids for chronic pancreatitis for quite awhile. As soon as I started on Harvoni I found that they are no longer effective. The longer I'm on Harvoni ( currently at week 5) the less effective they are. i can barely stand the pain. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm afraid I'm not going to make it to week 12. I haven't had my tests yet, not until tomorrow so I don't know how it's going but 8 weeks if that is all I'll be able to do. I hate to quit but I really can't stand this and now the additional leg, hip and foot pain. Well, anyway I just want to know if anyone else has had this experience.
Thanks All

Hi Julu, and welcome to the forums! :)

I don't know the answer to your pain meds question. But I would definitely ask your doctor and your pharmacist and even call Gilead's support line to see what alternate pain meds they could recommend while you are on treatment. I hope someone here with more experience of your particular situation will reply to you.

Do everything you can to stick it out for 12 weeks. There must be something else that can work as a pain med. Medical marijuana? Acupuncture? I am just throwing out ideas…

Good luck and do keep us posted.

Thank you, Kim for replying. I have told my Harvoni team which is how it works at Kaiser, also my doctors, GI and PCP. All say there is no such side effect listed in their literature. There is a blurb about possible pancreatitis but the word "possible" is just enough for them to view me as drug seeking. I am not! I have cut my meds down to less than half a year ago but still, I have no help from my doctors. Thankfully someone here posted the phone numbers for Gilead and the FDA so that I can at least report it. Thanks again for posting. julu

I forgot, I don't tolerate marijuana well and it's contraindicated for Harvoni, right?

julu49, about side effects, CHepCFree used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain the list of side effects reported to the FDA and offered to email it to any forum member who wants it. I don't know whether there is information about pancreatitis on it that would change Kaiser's policy, but it might be worth checking with CHepCFree -- here's the link to that post:

Because of the relatively new History of this drug- Harvoni - I felt it important for me to give up all supplements and medications I could for the period of time I am on treatment. The Benadryl was hard to give up and the Ibuprofen because I had 1 long headache lasting about 1 week when I first started Harvoni. I did take 1 Ibuprofen during this time. The Benadryl I took almost every night after working 2nd shift for sleep. Its going OK but seriously I would dry complimentary medicine such as acupuncture; meditation; walking;. Since the medication is so new - we don't really know ALL the interactions and what could potentiate or negate the action of the Harvoni. I Just really want rid of this HEP C and I don't want to screw up my chances. No Judgment though - to each there own path
