Heartburn on Harvoni
« on: September 12, 2015, 11:19:06 pm »
I'm almost 2 months into my 24 wk Harvoni treatment.  When I started I was told to take my omeprazole with the Harvoni in the morning and instead of taking 2 150mg ranitidine per day to just take one at bedtime.  The reasoning behind that was, in the nurse's words, because "Harvoni likes an acid environment".

For the past week I've been having steadily worsening heartburn/gastric distress that comes and goes but is worse in the evening.  I started taking the ranitidine before supper a couple of days ago but I haven't noticed any improvement.

I'm wondering if any of you have the same problem and/or what you've been advised to do regarding ranitidine (if you take it) or how to ease the gastric distress if you are having this problem.  I'll contact my doc, of course, if the problem continues.

Have a happy day  :D

Please do not take any acid reducers except as recommended bu your doctor and the prescribing information sheet.

For me that was the toughest part on treatment was the chronic heartburn. I have a hiatial hernia and constant acid reflux. I did take an occasional tums at bedtime to help when lying down as loon as you take tums or similar no closer than 4 hours of Harvoni you will be fine at least you can have some temporary relief.

I stopped taking prilosec on treatment. When I finished treatment I kissed the box of prilosec and said oh prilosec how I have missed you.

Hang in there and ask your doctor drinking water can help also

Wishing you the happiest of New Year I counted the weeks you should be done around then :)

Thank you Lynn!  That's exactly what I wanted to know - whether heartburn was a consequence of taking Harvoni or if my own underlying GI problems were being worsened because of the med changes.  And, I figured out that this all started after I ate some Indian food.  I haven't had spicy food since starting the Harvoni and reducing the ranitidine, so I'm thinking now it had more to do with that than anything.  The symptoms have subsided.

I bought some Mylanta just in case but haven't used it so far.  Water does help!

I'm very optimistic about 2016; I feel that it's going to be a very good year  ;)

Same thing for the mylanta as the Tums seperate from Harvoni by at least 4 hours and lay off the spicy food for a while :) lol
