Pretty happy!
« on: September 11, 2015, 03:05:13 pm »
Just got call from nurse re: my 9 week blood draw.

She said I was "undetected"!

Course she has said this before and the report said >15  HCV RNA detected.

But ,  I'll take it anyway!

She is sending me hard copies.  I would love to see the actual word "undetected" on there!

Meant to ask her on the phone but was too excited!!

How ya gonna celebrate? Ice cream? or…?

kim

well actually ,  I have to say.... i ate whatever i wanted during tx... good food, healthy food and baaaadddd food, cookies , candy etc.

The first time i tx'ed I totally obsessed about insulin resistance... which i got under control with the south park diet.... and it was brutal .... and I still was unresponsive.

This time I said ..."screw that"... but here's the weird thing...before I cleared I was hungry ALL OF THE TIME.

On this new tx, I could eat say a handful of peanuts between class and I was fine and satisfied for an hour or so.....
I could eat lunch and not be hungry again 30 minutes later.

Well here is what was going on (IMO)  the hcv virus was making  me IR, resulting in this roller coaster blood sugar.  I was thinking that my IR was caused by my eating habits,... but actually it was the virus causing me to be IR...(which HCV thrives on).

Anyway , mystery solved... and so nice to be able to eat and be satisfied for and hour or 2..... haven't tried Chinese food yet.....that will be a good test.

And thanks Kim for all your advice and encouragement!

Sorry so chatty....its the stupid riba.

Well, these test machines are all different and different labs have different equipment....
turns out, mine was like several tried to tell me.... my machine (tobas taqman v2) apparently does double duty.. it can do a quantitive measure but if there is no hcv rna it reports:
"Hepatitis C Quantitation HCV Not Detected IU/mL"

My nurse highlighted that part... guess she picked up on my confusion re:quantitative vs qualitative .

Ps - I had a lab at a major university hospital that labeled my blood draws with THE WRONG NAME... what a mess.... the tech is always supposed to show you all three vials , with your name on the sticker... not just one vial...Everyone , always ask to see your sticker on your vials.... all of them.  Assume nothing.

Slats .... you are right behind me... and insurance will get it figured out.... everything is a constant battle , at least in my part of the country and insurance companies are getting pickier and jerkier.  Just keep fighting them.. you will win.  Keep asking for supervisors ....lower level workers are seldom helpful.  And most of the ones that gave me the most problem were from  Memphis (online pharmacy, that likes to pretend they are my insurance company and my insurance company lets them and passes the buck.
Shameful.

The only reason I got the vl tests that i did , is cause my doc is still thinking old school tx.

But I was so glad he ordered them as they did encourage me greatlyl

But they are not near as required as before.

Get em while you can, cause I got a sick feeling the ins companies are gonna get real stingy with them.

How do you feel vs. 2 years ago? Energy?

That is a great question Shelton!

Its weird.  Its like two levels - the top level is the edgy, riba cough , winded level.

but underneath that there is a new feeling of normalcy. Being infected for 30 years... things changed so gradually, that I never really felt "sick", (except when the virus became very active, vomiting, chills, flu like, bad joint pain.  That lasted about a month and then I just gradually became moodier, less energy, ..etc... but it was so over so long a period that I really didn't notice.

But now!!!  The first think I noticed .... the joint pain in each finger joint just disappeared at about week 3!  Just woke up,... pain gone!!! joint pain in hip gone!!  Thats when I knew....this stuff is working!
Also, I noticed that I was not hungry all the time.  Meals could hold me for 2,3, 4 hours.  Not like before, when I would eat and eat again 30 minutes later. The virus was inducing insulin resistance.  i tried to control this with diet, but now, it is gone.   Gonna get an IR test soon, and I bet it is normal.  And was normal only once in the past 15 years... and that was when I did the south park diet... which was nooo fun.

Other thing I noticed.... colors are more vibrant, my sense of smell is better.  And other system are working more like when I was 20yrs old with out giving TMI.    I am not as grumpy,  I have happy feeling that I remember having as a child... a profound appreciation of the moment I'm in... it could be a child laughing, a dog wagging his tail, a cloud passing, rain,  anything... and can bring me to the point of tearfulness.  It is not unpleasant , and I hope its not just the riba, cause I see beauty in things I see and hear that I haven't felt since I was a child through my 20s.   weird.  Hope it lasts.  I like it.

again...great question!!!

Hi Drummerman,
Very interesting on the insulin resistance...That may be a problem I have had for awhile now...years actually.  I need to eat often and sometimes if I don't I get very shaky and irritable.  I'm surprised none of my doctor's have ever suggested that I take that test.  I started Harvoni 12 days ago and have had no bad sides unless you call energy boosts bad...well actually about 2 hours after dosing I do get a bit anxious for about an hour but it passes.  I would love my appetite to suppress a bit, weights not a problem but my liver probably doesn't appreciate having to process food constantly!!  I'll ask my GP about it, Thanks for the post, I thought I was just a piggy :)

Its funny how it seems everyone on Harvoni feels such energy boosts and previous symptoms disappear while on VP it seems to be the opposite.

Hi Deathtohep,
I have clearer thinking at week 3, it's still slow, but I have been able to read for small periods after 4 years post tx of not being able to concentrate long enough. Other than that, I'm too sick with sxs to feel better. That sounds really spooky baby.  :'(cal

Most doctors won't even know what you are talking about if you bring up IR.   They will just keep saying "we'll you A1C is fine and your not diabetic"..

If you have hcv , you are more than likely insulin resistant.  I have the formula for calculating IR somewhere, will look for it later.  I had to give it to my doctor.

My appetite is not suppressed now....it just that my blood sugar levels are now stabilized (I believe) and so I don't spike and then go low.  I had the same shakiness, etc.... not overweight either.   I use to always get so annoyed when my college room mate used to always say  "your always hungry! and eating all the time".

I will look around for some bookmarks and look and books and try to send you some info.   Don't even mention to your doc until you have some background info.... he more than likely look at you like you are insane.

Fortunately my doc is very open and looks at everything I give him...or at least he says he does...he may just be humoring ...but if I ask for an IR test, he gives it to me.

Thanks DM,  any info would be greatly appreciated :)

Here is the website with an online calculator or you can do the math yourself.
You have to get a fasting glucose test and a fasting insulin test.

http://gihep.com/calculators/other/homa/

Again, your doc may act like you are insane and tell you "you are  not diabetic, you are not overweight and you A1C is perfect."

But here's the deal.  If you are IR , you are probably producing enough insulin.  The dumbed down explanation I received (and thats the only way I could understand it) is:   "You have plenty of insulin, it moves sugar into the cells of your blood.  The problem is each cell has a lock on it.... if you are IR, these locks are rusty and hard to open, so insulin can't efficiently move sugar into the cell.  The insulin cannot unlock the rusty lock.  To top that off, your pancreas starts creating too much insulin in an attempt to compensate..... guess what this leads to....pancreatic cancer.. not good.

Now while HCV induces IR , so does your diet.  So it is a battle on two fronts , until you get rid of your hcv...then it gets a lot easier diet-wise.

The only time I got my IR under control was when I went on the south beach diet...it was grueling and it work and I did feel better.  Then I switch to a strict paleo diet and that worek as well.  But now I eat a wide variety of food both good and bad.

Anyway , here is a good book that does a good job of explaining IR.
"The Insulin-resistance Diet,  Cheryle R. Hart, M.D."

I think I got it from amazon.  It  is far more than a diet book and has a lot of good info.  Check it out.

ps - something like 80% of all IRs go on to become diabetic.  Not totally sure of the percentage....its somewhere in the book.  And  you can find many websites that also do a good job explaining.

Good luck getting your doctor to order you a fasting glucose and fasting insulin blood test.  But let him know how you are hungry all of the time , and irritable if you don't eat and feel you may be Insulin Resistant which you are concerned may lead to diabetes.

Post the result is you do get your HOMA score.  Would be interested.

Hi all,
I was alerted to IR before my first tx and went on a low GI diet. I got my homa index down to a great level. I have stuck with it because of the propensity of HCVers developing Diabetes 2. Drummer man will tell you how to do the calculation easier but here is a link to a calculator.  https://www.dtu.ox.ac.uk/homacalculator/

Thanks DM,  any info would be greatly appreciated :)

ps - I might be a little too hard on doctors  concerning IR subject.  Things could be totally different now.  A lot has changed since 2008.

Also, I really don't think IR has an effect on today's new tx, but it is good to have it under control just so you  don't have those glucose spikes.

This is an interesting topic since in the last couple years I have felt extreme fatigue after eating in addition to heart problems which led to Afib and an ER visit. Later they said I have MVP but will get this checked further after treatment. I also had high levels of protein in my urine and high BP consistently. Again, all in the last two years these things have developed. Ive always wondered if I was prediabetic but Ive told two doctors about my symptoms and they just told me to limit my sugar intake. I will agree that doctors overlook a lot and its hard for me to trust them when they tell me nothing is wrong....obviously something is wrong or I wouldnt be there! ???
