Fatty Liver for $100 Alex
« on: February 26, 2016, 07:51:14 pm »
I'm just curious how many were also diagnosed with fatty liver along with all their other tests before treatment.I know it can be caused by everything from being overweight(not me 8) ),to alcohol.Has anyone that has finished the treatment seen a marked improvement,or even been tested again for it since EOT?This is just some curiosity on my part.

I was never diagnosed with "fatty liver" but there was some fatty infiltrates noted on my old biopsies. Just wondering how did you get diagnosed with fatty liver? What testing and results? I have been recently curious about how one is evaluated for fatty liver disease.

I've always just assumed my liver was as slim as the rest of me. Svelte even. No one has mentioned any different. Would drs tell me if I had it?

I had a ultrasound done last year and it showed up on that Lynn.I don't remember what the test was even for specifically but they did my liver in the process and it showed up.I know the HCV and several other factors, being overweight and such, can cause it.

Have a look at this Philly. This was just one of those questions that popped into my head so I asked.

Hellooooo
I was diagnosed by ultrasound about 20 years ago with fatty liver..I'm svelte too.
I had had the hep for about 10 years at that point.
The last few years, I've had a few ultrasounds, and no one has mentioned the fatty liver!  Weird, and I wonder if the first doc knew what he/ she was looking at!?

Now that hep C is curable, fatty liver is predicted to be a bigger health problem than hep C is and may overtake it as the #1 reason for liver transplants. You don't need to be overweight to have it - if you saw SuperSize me, you may recall that Morgan Spurlock ate a crappy diet for a month and got hepatitis - what he got was a fatty liver. Diet and lack of exercise are factors. We see it in kids. GT  3 hep C is a risk factor for fatty liver disease.

HEP is just beginning to develop its fatty liver disease info: https://www.hepmag.com/basics/nash-nonalcoholic-steatohepatitis-basics/nash-nonalcoholic-steatohepatitis

OK so if my ALT and AST are now in normal range even though my BMI needs to be lower 29.9 BMI) and I need to exercise I can safely assume I don't have NASH?

Not necessarily Lynn. You can have a fatty liver and normal liver enzymes, however if your liver enzymes are normal, it is less likely that you have fatty liver disease or a serious form. It helps if your lipid profile and indicators of diabetes/prediabetes are normal.
Our understanding of the disease is rapidly changing, even the name we call it is being debated.

This is a good article for starts: http://patients.gi.org/topics/fatty-liver-disease-nafld/

BillT,

I'll get back to you, on that.
I was told I have fatty liver, on my last sonogram.
I've been on prednisone for awhile, I didn't have it before it.

At the time of starting Harvoni, my prednisone dosage has been tapered down to 1mg a day, (from 60)
So, in time, with diet and more exercise, I hope to see the fatty liver go away along with the extra lbs.

After treatment, and with a little time, I'll know more...

This is just one of those things that I thought about and threw out there for discussion.I'm not sure how all of this comes together but I know the HCV wrecks havoc on the liver, and in a lot of cases more organs, because of the liver damage it causes(+-).A lot of us have lived with this for decades and I find some of the recovery stories I read nothing short of amazing.I requested another FibroScan 6 months EOT,and when I did they told me they were curious and had been wondering about it themselves.I think all of this is new to everyone and what "cured" is going to mean for us.

While I'm at it.I get my 12 week EOT done around the 1st.SVR12 here I come.I'm nervous as hell but I feel good about it.I'll post when I have the results.Fingers crossed.
