HARVONI and high glucose levels??
« on: April 22, 2016, 01:38:40 pm »
Good Afternoon:

I have been on Harvoni since March 8, and after one month the great news is that the virus is undetectable. I was stage 3 fibrosis/early cirrhosis.  The bad news, however, is that my glucose level was 497 on the same day of bloodwork.  I was really not expecting that!!

In 2002, I went through 48 weeks of Pegintron with the virus clear at 24 weeks, but returning after the full course of treatment.  Many of you know who have experienced it, but the Pegintron was an awful nightmare.  From the treatment I became hypothyroid, type 2 diabetic, stomach issues, requiring 2 surgeries, arthritis, and fatigue lasting for several years.  I controlled the diabetes with diet and exercise and was never on any treatment.  Now, 14 years later, and one month on Harvoni, I am on metformin, and insulin.  Diabetes does not run in my family, anywhere.

Has anyone experienced this while on Harvoni?  I would appreciate any information.

For those on Harvoni, or those thinking of going on it, the side effects, other than this diabetes issue, are minimal.  I actually had an enormous amount of energy at first, a tiny mild headache, and light fatigue.  Usually, I drink more water and the headache goes away immediately. I lie down if tired and in 10-15 minutes all is great.  I would encourage all to consider.  I was on a 10 month wait list to start the treatment.

Thanks!!

What does your doctor say about this?

I did the old treatment 3 times first time was interferon mono-therapy 3 shots a week only. Ribavirin was not used I don't think it had been invented at that time (1994) and two treatments with interferon & ribavirin. My viral load actually increased on treatment. My glucose tends to run a bit low.

Good luck with treatment and hope you get the glucose issue figured out
