Discordant viral load results-prior to treatment
« on: November 23, 2016, 04:04:19 pm »
Hi:

My pre-treatment viral load lab results:

 HCV RT-PCR, Quant (Non-Graph)
  :     1436300    Log     6.157

Then: same date. same lab, same blood test:

HCV RNA by PCR w/reflex to Genotype
:   Hepatitis C Quantitation    982000    IU/mL   HCV log10    5.992

Curious about meaning of these discordant results?

Which of these is the "real" viral load?

Viral load is changing constantly take the average. That is not really a significant difference at only about one tenth of a log change.

The only value that is important is either you have a viral load or you are not detected.

The number doesn't really matter

Curious why you had "same date. same lab, same blood test:"
The viral load test is I believe about $400 dollars to perform wondering why they would do the same expensive test twice in one day

Thanks Lynn.

It's still odd because both results are from tests done from very same sample, very same lab, very same time. so wondering if these are different types of tests being run.

Was wondering same. Why duplicate such a costly test. The one with the lower reading had "Reflex to Genotype" yielding 2a.  The other vl ddi not. So maybe when they genotype it, they also run a viral load?. Nothing urgent here. Just very curious n a tad obsessive

Sample variation? Nature of the testing method?

Still not a numerically significant difference.

My understanding is that during the amplification process that occurs to the sample prior to reading the test, they end up with slightly different results for the different genotypes so the first 'non graph' result is the raw reading and then they factor in the genotype adjustment (reflex) which gives the second correct(ed) result.
