Treatment didn't help at all, other options?
« on: May 22, 2013, 07:00:15 am »
Hello,

I'm writing in behalf of my brother, he has Hepatitis C. He was on treatment for 3 months, after that they did the needed tests, and said the viral load only went down very little. During the treatment he didn't feel any side effects though, a bit more emotional in the first week and that's it. So since, he didn't improve at all, they don't think it's necessary to continue the treatment, becase it has no effect. He will start taking some other medicine, but i don't think it's to eliminate the virus.

The name of the medicine he took is the following:
Roche (brand)
Pegasys
Peginterceron alpha - 2a

What are the options right now? To wait till new drugs come out? Start the treatment over again? Are there any other drugs he can take, like other brands? I'm affraid he'll get worse soon if we don't do anything. Right now though he feels great.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Hi Madhatter,

Welcome to the forums.

What kind of shape is your brother's liver in? That's a key factor in deciding next steps. If it is in good shape then you can wait for the next round of drugs which look to be more potent with higher cure rates.

I agree with Frank.  I assume that was the co-pegasys dual treatment?  What genotype is he?  Non-responders have responded to some of the newer drugs in trials, as well as to the triple therapy currently being used, so if his liver is good I suggest seeing a liver specialist in about one year for options.  But do go to a specialist (Hepatologist) and not a regular GI doc.  If the liver is bad, get to a liver doc immediately.  Good luck.  -jack
