Olysio & Sovaldi and Kaiser
« on: June 09, 2014, 04:15:36 pm »
So I emailed my doctor about the Olysio & Sovaldi combination to treat my Hep C. I am coinfected, but for some reason, my doctors want to wait for the better treatment options. She initially didn't think that Olysio was approved, but it is. Is there a reason for concern here? Should I find another doctor?

Hi D-Boy,

There are treatment options available if you are co-infected with hepatitis C and HIV. You need to know your genotype and then check out this page... http://www.hepmag.com/articles/2678_25345.shtml. It includes a PDF chart of the current AASLD recommended treatment options for each genotype.

Although Olysio is approved by the FDA, it is NOT approved to be used with Sovaldi. Janssen has filed for approval (http://www.hepmag.com/articles/Olysio_Sovaldi_FDA_2501_25561.shtml) and, anecdotally in these forums, you will read about folks taking them together because their doctors prescribed them off-label. Medicare also recently announced in special situations that they will cover treatment with Olysio and Solvaldi (http://www.hepmag.com/articles/Medicare_payment_2501_25688.shtml).
In the end, it is a decision between you and your doctor what fits your situation best as there are a lot of factors to be considered. If you aren't comfortable with your current doctor's recommendations then a second opinion sounds like a good idea.
