Melatonin
« on: July 16, 2014, 10:09:21 pm »
I had my 1 month follow up with my nurse practitioner today. She  spent a long time with me and answered all of my questions. I was very please. She suggested I try taking Melatonin to help with my insomnia.  Has anyone out there tried it? Any success? My insomnia is not too bad anymore but I am not sleeping as soundly as I used to and I don't like taking drugs that make me drowsy the next day. I'd love to hear  any success stories. Thanks.

Hi Kristy,

I took Melatonin recently for insomnia. I didn't sleep better but I had lots of dreams. It is definitely good to take for sleep. It can't hurt, but I would let your Doc know if your pattern doesn't normal out after three weeks.
  Some suggestions :
Try to go to bed at the same time every night.
Stay in bed even if you don't feel tired.
Avoid naps, or nothing longer then 10 min.
Don't drink a lot of caffeine drinks during the day.
Don't do puzzles just before bedtime or in bed.
If you know how to meditate sit before bed.

    Fare Well on your path.

   Blessings,

Hi,
It is a good choice because it is safe and doesn't appear to interact with any hep C drugs. The tricks are to take it properly and to find the right dose, and in melatonin's case - more is not necessarily better. Here is some info: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/natural/940.html

I've been taking 1 MG of fast dissolving Melatonin at night and it does seem to help with the insomnia. Doesn't make me feel groggy in the morning either.  I'm so glad I tried it.
I also cut back a little on the water because I was getting up several times a night to pee. I'm still drinking about 75 oz a day. I was drinking 100 oz. but my doctor said that was not as necessary since I'm not doing the interferon.  Water does help a lot with the headaches though. Pkain old Aspirin seems to help more that Tylenol or Advil too.
Hope this is helpful to someone else out there.
