Question about A and B Vaccines
« on: November 18, 2014, 07:16:01 am »
HI All,

I started with the vaccines for A and B as soon as I was diagnosed with C and cleared for them. I already had the first 2 doses of both as a combo but have another to take in Feburary, I guess it's a 6 month gap you wait to take the final one.

Just curious if I am safe from A and B now or won't be until after the last shot in February. If it's February how soon after the last immunization will it be effective and keep me safe from A and B?

Just know the last thing I need is to somehow get A or B while in the midst of fighting C. I am paranoid because I don't know for sure how I got the Hep C in the first place.  Doesn't really matter anyway but does make me worry about A and B until the immunizations kick in.

Hi Mel,
You aren't fully protected until your last vaccines, but where I retired from people were allowed to work after their first hepB shots. We did not vaccinate for hepA. I am sure that you are following safe practices to keep other from contracting your hepC and that in turns will keep you from contracting hepB.
HepA is primary spread because people don't wash their hands after having a BM and contaminate food. This is why you see outbreaks related to restaurants. I don't eat where people don't wear gloves. And don't ever eat unwrapped mints beside the cash register. Years ago 60 minutes did a piece on this and most mint bowels have fecal material in them from where people went to the bathroom, did not wash their hands and picked up mints while paying for their food.

Ouch Bucky!! that's so sick!!! Yuck yuck yuck!!

Anyway of course I am taking precautions with my HepC and I don't have Hep A or B; just worried about getting it. I don't think my sick liver could take it.

Precautions are everyday life for me with Hep C and can't really think of anything I do differently than I did before I found out. I'm just more vigilant and did buy a new set of nail clippers for the grandson.

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and thank you for always taking the time to respond to me as well as others.

Mel - you can safely take all vaccines while on any hep C treatment, and it is much better to take than not take.

Hi Lucinda,

I agree completely and have started the series for A and B; I have one more to take in February. I was trying to figure out when I will be safe from A and B; I'm so careful especially because the current status of my liver disease. I figured it would be after I completed the entire series but wasn't sure.

No I haven't had either and I can't take a regular flu shot. Last time I had was about 10 yeas ago; my arm tripled in size.  This  doctor who was my allergist at the time told me to ever get a flu shot again. I hate shots and needles and I have been stuck more the past 6 months that I did my entire life!!

Mel,
Ask your doctor about these two vaccines. The PREVNAR 13 is recommend for people over 50 and the TDAP will protect your for whooping cough. I have had both since a damaged liver taxes the immune system.

Hi all

Just saw a commercial for the Prevnar13 today I was going to send a message to my doc to ask if I need it. I had the pneumonia vaccine when I was diagnosed with cirrhosis in '08.

Anyone have any thoughts about adult varicella vaccine and/or Shingles vaccine? I am 56 I was born in 1958 and have never been vaccinated and never had chicken pox. Trying to figure out if I should have one the other or both eventually. Haven't had a whopping cough either. They said I didn't need that one as a am not around kids.

I get my flu shot every year and since I have cirrhosis my doctor says I must get it every year and as soon as it is available. Got this years back in September.

Best to all

Hi Lynn,
I had the other vaccine 12 years ago the Prevnar13 right after it was approved. I am glad that they are running the commercials or it. Most drug stores that have the flu vaccine have the Prevnar13 as well.
