I thought HARVONI was sovaldi and ribivarin in one.

Hi Hepfreein15,

Harvoni is Sovaldi (sofosbuvir) combined with Ledipasvir in a single pill.

Sometimes, Ribavirin is taken along with Harvoni to boast the effectiveness  in difficult to treat populations.

Ribavirin is a HCV nucleoside inhibitor; while Ledipasvir is an HCV NS5A protein inhibitor. Although both are HCV inhibitors, they have different mechanisms of action.

Best wishes, Mike

dragonslayer, Lynn K:  Started Harvoni Dec 17 for 12 wks, because still detected after 4 wks (vl 21) doc wants to add Riba which I will begin next week.  8 week blood work will be done on Feb 10.

I'm keeping positive and looking forward to next blood work.

Hi RiseUp

Does liver bio 2/4 mean inflammation 2 fibrosis 4? Do you have cirrhosis? If you do you need 24 week of Harvoni.

So far I had my 1 week on riba blood test and my hemoglobin is still within normal at 11.9 with minimum normal is 11.1

Good luck hope your next viral load is UND!

Hi Lynn K, No I do not have cirrhosis. Results of my last liver bio (2011): inflammation 1-2/4 and fibrosis 2/4.  Compared to the prior bio (2006): inflammation 2/4 and fibrosis 2/4. Diagnosis: inflammation and fibrosis is slightly decreased.

Waiting for my riba to be delivered tomorrow (Tues).

Thanks Lynn and continued success with your treatment.

RiseUp,
Did it really take 2 weeks for you to receive your report from your 4 week labs? That's a long time!  I wonder if they did your labs now, if you would be UND?
So, you will be taking Ribavirin for your last 4 weeks of Harvoni treatment, is that correct?
I'm asking because I'm wondering if I should ask my doctor to add Ribavirin to my last 4 weeks of Harvoni.  My 8 week labs showed <15 (detected)  vs. my 4 week labs showed UND.  My 12 week labs would be at EOT, so too late to do anything at that point.
I'm debating whether or not to ask my dr. about adding Ribavirin.  It would be helpful to refer him to any article that recommends this.
RiseUp, Lynn, have you read anything about the benefit of adding Ribavirin to Harvoni?
Lynn, I'm glad your combo is working :)
Cheers

Not sure if there would be any benefit for someone in your situation.

If it was me I would contact my doctor and ask for their recommendations

Hi bridget, actually got my results 4 days after blood was drawn, except my viral load which I received within the following week.  I waited to post the results together. I started Riba yesterday (2/4) and will be going to my doc for my 8 week blood work this coming Tuesday (2/11).  I will then be one week on Harvoni and Riba.  Looking forward to being undetected.  Will post my results as soon as I received them.  Today is day 51 Harvoni and day 2 Riba.

Lynn, how are you doing on Riba?

Dear Rise up. A 2011 liver biopsy, in my humble opinion, is kind of out of date. A new fibroscan or ultrasound at minimum should be done determine the status of your liver now. At the very least ask your doc what he or she thinks about it.
I went from f1 to cirrhosis in 3 years. So did another poster here. Rapid liver damage after treatment for non responders or non naive patients appears to be more common than I thought. My doctor said it wasn't all that unusual for it to happen so quickly. A bit ironic for HCV to sit around for 35 years and not do much then sort of bloom at this stage of the game. Personally I think the drugs I took in 2011 to fight this insidious disease may have played a key role in how fast my liver took a turn for the worse. A big shock for me to find out that I was cirrhotic to say the least. Better to find out now and get the 24 weeks if necessary. Or be happy if it is still the same! I hope that it is. Only wishing you all the best.
Send love to your liver!
Good luck!

I started Harvoni January 7, 2015...I just started my second bottle, I am on the 8-week treatment. Everyone keeps talking about the 4-week blood work.  My Gastro has told me that I will get tested 8 weeks after I stop.
Does anyone know what happens if the Hep C is still detected after the treatment on Harvoni?

I guess they would either retreat for longer or try a new med but best to ask your doctor and don't worry about this unless you find yourself there. This medicine has a very high cure rate.

Congratulations to everyone who is undetected!  I have two pills left now, then I wait for the 12-week post treatment blood test.  I have felt good the whole time on Harvoni and have been able to work.  Thinking positive and taking it one day at a time is really good advice.  Good Luck to all of us! :D
