Approved for Harvoni
« on: November 05, 2014, 01:06:48 pm »
Just got the call from my doctor. Gilead just comfirmed they have approved me for a 24 week plan of Harvoni. I failed  interferon / rib and peg/ rib over 10 years ago. I now  have chirrosis and genotype 1. My insurance denied me for Harvoni . They did approve Solvardi/interferon. Not a chance! I would rather die first. I should have my first bottle next week. $189,000 at no cost! Unbelievable!  Thanks mysupportpath. You are the best! There is hope for us all! I've waited 17 years for a miracle drug! God is good! I'll post regularly on how it goes.

Thanks Art. What I have a hard time with is I pay big bucks to my insurance company . They gladly take my money, but fail to cover Harvoni. Even 24 weeks of it is way cheaper than a liver transplant! Gilead is doing the right thing .

Fllazylady, I am 62 and have known about my hep c since 1997. I think I got it in 1970  when I was in Navy boot camp from those air guns.  They would shoot you in the arm to give you all kinds of drugs. They finally banned them in the 90's. They thought because they had no needles, they were safe. They would  cut your skin and blood would blow back on the gun head and the next guy got what you had. I'm thinking I'm going to do mine at 8pm. Hopefully I will sleep thru the sides. If any. I did that with interferon  and it seemed to help. But after all not much helped with that nasty stuff!  Day  after tomorrow I am popping my first  pill! Let's roll! Fitting eh, Nov 11 veterans day! Let's kill this beast!!!!
Let me know how you feel after your first dose. Good luck! How long are you on for?

I felt so fine after the first day that I went out and ate cajun food that night.
The food bothered my stomach for a few hours after that. Eat light non greasy, no spicy food the first few days and you should be fine. Drink lots of water.

Sorry, it is 24 weeks. Not 48. Must have been thinking of the interferon I did in the past. I failed that peg and rib, twice, genotype 1 and chirrosis  = 24 weeks of Harvoni max. Sorry about that. 6 months is not 48 weeks! Ha! Guess it just seemed like 48 ;)

Wow, Harvoni is amazing stuff  so far. No sides the first day. 8pm seems to work for me. Slept fairly well. I've been waking up a few times a night for as long as I can remember.  I was able to go right back to sleep last night. If this keeps up, I can do this. Let's see what day two has in store. Let the battle continue !  I'm gonna kick some hepc butt!

Fllazylady, That is awesome news! Thanks for the update.  I am so glad you are doing well. Keep posting and so will I.
I remember how scared I was when holding that needle full of interferon in my hand all those years ago on my first injection . I really felt pretty aweful. But what a wonderful  surprise when I woke up today feeling great! We can do this! Let's keep our fingers crossed! Thanks to all those men and women who spent countless days and years developing Harvoni!  You guys ROCK!
Blessings and prayers to all of you in treatment.

Day two with my new friend Harvoni....
Nothing really to say. Feeling great, slept well. Woke up a couple of times to pee as normal for me, but went right back to sleep. I drink water every chance I get. Even during the night.  If this keeps up, this should be a walk in the park. I can feel something is changing,  but it's all good. Can't really put my finger on it. God is with me on this journey  and He has my back. I'm thankful just to wake up each day!

I'll probably only post if something changes or when I get blood work done.
Peace and may we all be cured very soon!

Currently yes Harvoni is only approved for Genotype 1

Per the American Association for the Study of Liver a Disease treatment guidlines

http://www.hcvguidelines.org/sites/default/files/full_report.pdf

The treatment protocol for GT 3 is

"Recommended regimen for treatment-naive patients with HCV genotype 3, regardless of eligibility for IFN therapy:
Daily sofosbuvir (400 mg) and weight-based RBV (1000 mg [<75 kg] to 1200 mg [≥75 kg]) for 24 weeks is recommended for treatment-naive patients with HCV genotype 3 infection."

Hope that helps

Hey Willie G, truth is, I wish I had that much hair! ;) but I do have a killer beard! Not shaving till I'm cured! It went from my head to my face! HaHa! Got a flu shot two days ago, not good! Reminded me of my Inf/riv days! Just a slightly elevated fever 99.6 /headace. Tylenol seemed to help.  I slept longer than I have in years. A good 12 hrs! I was getting something like a cold coming on. Just barley, feeling better now.  You all have a great Thanksgiving and I truly enjoy reading all these posts. We are not alone!
One good thing, I have lost 6 lbs since I started Harvoni Nov 11. That's a good thing! Food tastes good, just can't eat more than I should. I sure pee a LOT, I drink a cup of water every trip.
Peace
Mikeyman
I order my second bottle of Harvoni next Tuesday. One almost down 5 to go! 24 weeks is a long time!

hey, mikeyman!  they say you CAN get flu shot with these meds, I remember I got the pneumonia shot and that was a weird ride and far as peeing goes oh BROTHER ,it sure takes it to another LEVEL eh?  after awhile you say the hell with it, grab your mas flower vase and at night use that or a 3liter cranberry juice container with the handle on it and that way you got a days worth and you have a nice tight cap on it that is if you don't have to modify it lol if you do well GOD BLESS YA  ''just'' Willie g  ya know I have a son in law [part of my outlaw family] that kinda raises the hair on my butt so I gave him a spiritual name because my daughter is LITTLEMOON,grandchild is HALFMOON,[we almost started a MOON FAMILY lol grandboy  WHITE CLOUD AND ANOTHER boy  IRONHORSE, so ya I gave him a nickname today SITTING BIRD,  he seemed to like that a lot but the MELONHEAD doesn't know what it stands for,.  it means a bird who is so full of shit he cant fly,, later brother,,,i tried sitting turkey and he frowned about that so I gave him SITTING BIRD,  [wait till he reads my journals when I die, then he will know hahaha  ''just''willie g

One bottle of Harvoni down, 5 more to go!
Got the second one right on time. Ordered it when I was down to 10 pills left.
So 29 days done so far, feeling excellent. No headaches, more energy than in the last 17 years. The only thing I noticed, when I sit up in bed or bend over, sometimes  I get a bit dizzy for a few seconds. Kind of weird, but goes right away.
I'm getting my first blood work this Friday, will know the results from almost 5 weeks early next week and I will post them. Hoping for UD!!!

Hi all, Got my results today after 4 weeks of Harvoni
Starting Viral Load 1,529,773  Now 23
Starting AST 110, Now 49 (Normal Range 14-40)
Starting ALT 131, Now 60 (Normal Range 10-53)
Bil Starting 0.8, No Change

My Doctor said with the Cirrhosis, it may take a bit longer. But I have seen this with many folks and my next blood work is Feb 14. It should be Undetectable!

So, This is way better than the Inf/Riv ever got. I'll take it! I feel better than I have in 17 years so it is doing its thing!

Gonna get this nasty beast!
Keep me in your prayers!

Thanks for the encouragement Mel. I was hoping for UD, but I'll take 23! It is a lot better than 1.5 mil! My doctor seems to think it was not a problem at all. A lot of his patients are in the same situation after 4 weeks that have had treatment before and have Chirrhosis. So far, after the second blood work they are all coming out UD!  He and his team have a very large practice and wrote 40 scripts out last week for Harvoni.

Killin it! Only 23 more to slay! HA!

Hey MM,

That's all great news and makes me smile. It's so nice to hear all the positives!

Right now I am on hold with my specialty pharm to order my next bottle of magic orange pills; somehow they have an error message. Hope they can fix it because it would really suck to spend a bunch more time dealing with them. I still have 2 weeks left so there's time.

Hey Sunrise, thanks for the kind words. I do hate waiting for the results as well.  My first go with inf/rib showed reduced vl. But it never got ud and starting getting higher. After a wasted 48 weeks of hell for nothing! Then along came the peg/rib. That made me nuts and I would have to pull over my car cuz I would feel like I was going to pass out. Just two months into that, they told me to stop as it was worse than the first time. So this Harvoni is a walk in the park. I did not expect to go UD at 4 weeks, but 23 is pretty low!
Like I say I have just under 5 months to go and have about 3 weeks left of the second bottle. The new one will hopefully be here tomorrow.  I feel great so far. I could do this for 48 weeks if I had to. But they think 24 should do the trick. I'm one of the hardest to go svr as I failed the two prior rounds and have cirrhosis.
All is well in my head!
Hope you and all of us stay UD for life. Keep up the fight!
Peace

Hi JTbow

I don't know specifically about truck driving but I think this might give you some ideas. Do you take a DOT physical? If you do did you have to tell them about your cirrhosis? If so did they say anything on your paperwork that if you take a new medicine you should tell someone for example you doctor you did the physical with?

If none on that applies and you just drive around locally but not with a specific truck drivers license I would think as long as you feel ok and not too tired to drive you should be fine just remember to consider you own safety as well as the other people out there on the road.

Another suggestion is ask your treating physician for their thoughts about driving professionally with your health problems.

Good luck

About driving and taking the medicine. I do find I have "flashes" on the corner of my eyes for 3 hours after taking the pill. It looks like if car lights would be at the peripheral. I found it OK on the highway. I take my pill at 5 pm after I don't have the need to drive far..  I guess everybody is different so try different recipes. Harvoni is a dream compared to the old medication. Good luck!

Two bottles of Harvoni down, 4 more to go! Feeling great! This is a walk in the park. I have had almost  no side effects at all, except for a slight occasional dizziness a couple of hours after taking the pill. I take it at 8 pm and by morning it's gone. I dont get my next blood work until Feb. After 4 weeks, it dropped from 1.5 million to 23. Hopefully it will be gone!
Still here!
Peace

Half way through bottle four of Harvoni. I  am getting my second lab Feb 13. Hoping for good news. Still no real sides to report.  The dizziness seemed to disappear when I  wake up. Harvoni for me is like taking vitamins. Lol.
I'll post my results as soon as I get them. Peace and healing to all. ;D

Hi thanks

My prior to riba HGB was 13.7 week 1 was 11.9 and week 2 was 10.3 no other Riba sides except the anemia as HGB is below min of 11.1 so I imagine we will be discussing dose reduction soon maybe.

The interesting lab that was a present surprise is my platelet count which has been in the 80 to 90 range for probably 5 years jumped to 148 just shy of min normal 150 woo whooo!

Can't explain it but not complaining!
