6 days on Harvoni-very bad side effects
« on: March 11, 2015, 11:37:59 am »
I'm on my sixth day taking Harvoni and things started out ok but as of yesterday my side effects hit me hard. I read all the info before taking Harvoni about the possible side effects and I looked at the % of people having headaches, insomnia etc.  and thought it will be no problem compared to my prior treatment with interferon. Yesterday my fifth day I had flu like symptoms and severe diarrhea that has continued today.
I emailed my Doctor and he says the drug is new and my Specialty Pharmacy tells me the same thing that the side effects are still not completely known.
Has anyone else had the same side effects? or is it just me.

A couple weeks in, I had flu like symptoms... Later on, I had a stomach issue with fever for a day.. I just assumed the flu like symptoms came from a cold, and the stomach thing was  from a bug I caught from somebody and it disappeared as quickly as it began...   Fact is, we really dont know if these symptoms even have anything to do at all with Harvoni.  I dont believe mine did.  I think the so called side effects were a breeze with this med.

Incidentally, I just got over a 5 day cold similar to the one I caught when taking Havoni.. Only now, I havent taken Harvoni for 6 wks... These things happen.. We catch colds; we catch stomach bugs.

I felt flu like for about 2 days but that went away almost as fast as it came on.

I'd not worry about it much. It means the meds are probably working.
Try to stay the course, The SFX will most likely go away soon.
At least that's what happened to me and many people here.

Drink LOTS of water. It's a must on treatment.
You need at least 2 quarts of water daily.

I also had diarrhea and cramping for the first two weeks (also headaches, tiredness), but Week 3 was better and Week 4 even better than that. Watch your diet, eat low fat and cut the sugar intake (puts less stress on your liver). One day at a time.

Just started the second month of treatment when I became very ill, with cramping and diarrhea. There was some vomiting the first day. It's now the fourth day. Going to the doctor in the morning.

good to check in with the doctor. There's a tendency on this forum to attribute everything as a symptom of the treatment. One fellow traveler here went to the doctor and discovered she has pneumonia.

It's best to get checked by your doctor, just in case it's something else. However, if it's not something else, there's a chance it's Harvoni. I've completed 6 weeks of Harvoni and still have nausea and diarrhea every day, plus headaches, anxiety,  mental fog, and fatigue. People on here have reported flu like symptoms that don't last long.

Keep drinking water and ask about phenergin or Zofran for your stomach. Try to eat light. Peppermint or ginger tea are also good for nausea and diarrhea. You can take ibuprofen or Tylenol for aches and pains.

I hope you feel better soon!

Going on my 3rd week and side effects are minimal. I saw my doctor on Friday after 2 weeks on Harvoni and he said it was too soon to check my viral load. I was finally able to go to the gym and take a spinning class to get moving again. I see some people have the side effects come back after 4 to 6 weeks???? Wow...

I'm Glad your side effects have become minimal. That's a good thing!

Everyone is different on their side effects. It's hard to tell how each of us will react. I can say for myself that some of mine went away. The Ones that stayed haven't gotten worse. If anything, I'm used to them now and just deal with it. I did get a couple new ones, but those have gotten better with time.

Here's hoping you continue on this path of minimal sides!

bud345, glad things have settled down. As I mentioned, I had similar side effects, but they pretty much disappeared after 2-3 weeks (I'm on Week 6). I still get things, tiredness and whatnot, but I know it's all transient and I try not to stress. Keep your eyes on the prize (end of treatment and that key 12 week followup). Hep C has taught me patience and Harvoni is reinforcing that lesson.

Patience has never been one of my strong points lol. I'm glad things have settled down with me and like you I still feel some tiredness but also like you I'm not stressing it. Been thru too much in life to worry now! Warmer weather is coming and a chance to get outdoors will make any side effects less problematic.
I must say that this blog has been helpful in that I don't feel alone taking a drug that's new. Thanks to all!

I've started my 5th week on Harvoni out of a 24 week regimen.  My side effects are not noticeable.  The first two weeks+ I experienced mild headache, etc. but nothing now.  I forced myself to start working out again and I think this has helped.  Just had my 4 week labs done and am waiting on results.  I drink at least a gallon of water every day.

Just a reminder, that sometimes flu-like symptoms are caused by things other than HCV treatment. We can get so wrapped up in treatment that we might overlook the fact that all around us, people get stomach viruses, mild food poisonings, the flu, etc. I've been there. For a week I blamed a rash on ribavirin  - it was poison oak. And I am a nurse, so if I did it, I bet others have too.

Please report all your side effects to FDA and to Gilead.  That is the only way the company knows.  This is a new and powerful drug and we need to help them to help us be informed consumers.  I have finished my treatment (waiting for SRV test) and now seem to have permanent tinnitus, brain fog and dizziness.   I'm hoping this will diminish over time but only time will tell.

I have 10 pills left out of 84. I don't know anything about this loose stool thing because I haven't had it. The flu like feeling I had bad for awhile. I have joint aches and headaches. I'll be glad when the last 10 days pass. I've been no VL since week 8. The side affects seem to come at different times during tx.

The second day on Harvoni I felt good, but I was coming off a flu bug.  I also noticed my eyes were a bit more sensitive to light.  A week later I noticed that the age spots on the back of my hand had faded and my skin felt softer.  I also felt healthier and stronger.  After the fist month, my blood test came back with a viral count of fifteen. I asked the nurse if it were fifteen thousand, and they said, no; fifteen, not fifteen thousand. Before that the count was twenty three thousand. I have not had much diarrhea, but I have been eating yogurt as a preventative.  I also normally eat salads and raw fruits, and a few other healthy things.
