I'm 60 and I'm an African American I got Hep C through a blood transfusion when I was an infant.

Is there anybody out there with Genotype 1A and who are taking thyroid medicine?

Please let me know.  Thank you.

Hi Dsmith,

I just completed 12 weeks SOL+INTF+RIBV and I'm a 1a.

I had a hemi-thyriodectomy (1/2 of my thyroid was surgically removed) about 4 years ago, and I had no issues with the new treatment.

I've never been on medication for my thyroid, however (that's why I had the sx).

The Hep-C doctor monitored my T levels during treatment. My T levels became a little unbalanced; but normalized after tx.

You and you're doctor will decide on the best treatment protocol for you, and, with proper monitoring, the thyroid shouldn't be a big issue.

Best wishes, Mike

Thanks for the information. I'll do some research on SOL INFT RIBV.  But my doctor said that with my age and being black and having Genotype 1A it will be difficult to treat the Hep C.

Well DS, you're in luck!

SOL+INTF+RIBV has the greatest success rate in treating African-American males with genotype 1a infections (about 88% chance of full clearance) then any other current tx combination.

However, other factors can also impact considerations/outcomes (high viral load, liver damage and so on).

Make sure you discuss this with your doctor.

Best wishes, Mike

DS, I just completed SOL INT RIB treatment, I am a 55 yr old female, caucasian with a thyroid condition. Previous interferon treatment wrecked my thyroid...currently take levothyroxine to regulate. Dr monitored my thyroid throughout treatment with no issues. Also GT 1a...Hep C is undetected in my body. I strongly encourage you to go get treatment. 60 is not that old, if your Dr won't treat you find a different Dr. Good luck :)

Hi,
I had geno 1a and thyroid issues. Although I am white, I had the unfavorable host genotype that is more common in Blacks. In October, the combo sofosbuvir and ledispavir is expected to be approved, and the response rates for Blacks is the highest ever, although slightly lower than other ethnic groups. Also, it doesn't have the effect on thyroid, and is MUCH easier to tolerate. I am now cured as a result (my 3rd treatment)

THE DRUG COMPANIES ARE HAVING YOU TAKE DRUG TEST BEFORE YOU TAKE ANY OF THE NEW MEDICINE WHY IS THAT? AND IF YOU FAIL IT . WOULD THEY STILL GIVE IT TO YOU?

The most insurance companies (not the drug companies) are requiring 6 months of sobriety, prior to authorizing Harvoni et al. If you fail the drug test, you will be automatically denied and will have to demonstrate 6 months of sobriety. There may be some mitigating circumstance granted - but it will be up to you to provide any.

Best wishes, Mike

Any schedule 1 substance, which includes marijuana. Alcohol use can also cause a denial.
