New here starting harvoni
« on: February 04, 2015, 02:26:52 pm »
So I should be starting my harvoni treatment feb 11 and I am anxious, nervous, excited, scared all in one! I am 29 years old and have had hep c my entire life from tainted transfusion. I found out during my second pregnancy. I have a viral load of 1.5 million CBC are all within normal limits, fibroscan says no damage according to specialist. I am scheduled to take 8 weeks course, is this enough? Also as for side effects I have 3 small kids ages 6, 2, and 8 months is this doable? My doctor says I will be fine to take care of the kids. I will have help from husband for 3 full days a week and afternoons. Also family a block away for evenings if need be. Here's to hoping this will work and we all can be cured!

Lol I have been reading up on posts for the last week and this forum seems to be very knowledgable! I have kept my disease quite hush hush only select few know! So I'm hoping I will be able to keep up with the kids and all their school/activities! And just maybe my baby will pick up sleeping all night long? Maybe that is wishful thinking! I Feel so blessed to have this opportunity to treat with new meds!

I'm a single mom of a 9 yo. I started Harvoni on Sunday. The Only help I've needed is getting my son to school due to brain fog for a couple hours in the morning (thank God for my mom!).

I have had side effects, but it's not bad. I can still perform normal functions like HW, cooking, and cleaning.

I Was scared, too. But it's ok. You're going to be alright. Change is scary, but this is a good change.

Congrats on all just starting treatment. As far as Tylenol pm or any sleep aid be sure to confirm it is ok to take the medication. Diphenhydramine is a no no.

Congrats, Tpropane!  Great news!!
Momof3, I have 14 days left to complete my 12 wk Tx and had few side effects until recently and these are not horrible.  I hope this reassures and encourages you.  Yes, it's a scary step but the right one to make.  Yea you!

I'm so glad to hear you have such good in person support nearby - really great for you and the kids even if you weren't battling the dragon :).  The people on the Forum are wonderful about sharing information and giving support.  I don't know what I would have done in the beginning if I hadn't found this connection.  No one understands quite like someone who's going through the same thing - especially with a new drug like Harvoni.  Stay positive, listen to your body and drink that water :)  ....Islandgirl

If you have access to Harvoni you are incredibly lucky!!! I had a viral load of 3 million and after 5 weeks the virus is undetected!! Amazing and feel so fortunate. Don't be scared - easy treatment to rid your body of a potentially life threatening virus. Best of luck and health to you!

Hi!  Help? I just received my Meds in the mail today. Im a mother of 2. My youngest is 9 months. I found out when I was pregnant. I'm totally freaking out abit. Just because it's so unknown to me.  I fought my insurance company since october to get these meds and now they are here.  And I have to take them now!  I'm just nervous. I am still breastfeeding, so as of today I am trying to ween my son so that I may start these meds. Any opinion I starting weekend or weekday? Also, this brain fog I keep reading about, should I be operating a car and driving to work?  I'm so excited and so nervous!  Has anybody changed their eating habits? Stopped drinking coffee?  Does anyone take vitamins? I'm happy to have found this forum. It's so hard not being able to talk to someoneas you go through it!

Happy to say day 2 was good! So far I just felt a bit strange overall but ok! I have been drinking water like crazy so that has really helped! I even got out and walked to my daughters school to pick her up, so that made me feel pretty good.

Island girl!! Good for you your almost done!! I am really great full to have found this forum it has really prepared me for everything and just knowing people are going through the same thing and can relate is a huge help mentally!

Suki... Yes I feel very lucky I always seem to have the bad end of the stick for everything in life and this has really changed that! So I am hoping for the best!

Bread winner.... I know those feelings you are going through I had them and do have them! I was told I had to be done breastfeeding to be on the meds so I would talk to your doctor or have babe off the breast completly before starting these drugs. I fought tooth and nail to get these from my insurance but I won  :D I haven't really changed my diet per say... But I upped my water and more veg! I worry about possible side affects too but I am dealing with today. That is it 1 day at a time that's all I can do! Try and get a support team to help if needed.
I haven't experienced any real sides worth noting so far so I will leave it at that! Best to you all and again... Thanks so much for all the support!

So good to have fellow travelers on this strange and sometimes frightening journey that is Hep C. Been infected since I was a teen, diagnosed 33 years ago, though back then this disease was just known as non-A, non-B hepatitis. Had lots of ups and downs healthwise and been told many times to just wait another year or two, a new treatment is around the corner. Now I'm 63 and starting Harvoni on Monday. Lots of emotion behind all of this, but it's been really helpful to read your stories, to learn from your experience and to gain encouragement. Wish me well brothers and sisters.

Welcome Breadwinner!

To add to what Annie said, my doc (and the nurse my insurance company assigned to check in with me!) said to try not to take anything you don't have to.  No vitamins, no herbal supplements.  I take my blood pressure med, an occasional Tylenol and right now an OTC cold med that I checked with my doc on.  BTW, I could have refused the monthly contact with the nurse from my insurance, but I think that if it somehow helps get another person approved, or puts a positive report in their records on treatment with Harvoni, I'm very willing to be helpful and cooperative.  Good luck and remember that most of us have minor, or at least very manageable, side effects - some people report not even having any!  Don't hesitate to call your doctor - they have a list of what cannot be taken with Harvoni, but to be safe, don't take anything you can do without :)

Atomic dog, welcome.  My story is similar re the non A/non B and I'm a bit older than you and just started treatment 12-3-14.  Being diagnosed as 1b, there were no real options I was willing to put myself through before now.  I know you'll do well and I'm hoping/praying that we all reach SVR/12/24 soon!  This magic pill is a piece of cake compared to what others have gone through in the past - Blessings, ...Islandgirl

Breadwinner, the fog only lasts a couple hours in the morning for me. I drink 2 cups of black unsweet coffee and tons of water and that helps a lot. While I'm feeling that way, I don't drive just to make sure. So I've changed some appointments to the afternoon.

Mom, that's exciting that you're d well. Yay!!!

Oh my gosh it is so nice to hear from so many right away!

Momof3 I intend to completely wean before I stArt the meds. The hormones and emotions of weaning are so intense. I'm so weapy. BUT it's for good reason.

I feel for all of you who have had this disease knowingly for so long!  I've had it a while too, but did not know until I was pregnant with my first. In a way my daughter saved my life!  I have been such an anxious emotional wreck since being diagnosed. I can't imagine 30 years!

Thanks for the heads up on the brain fog. I wonder if I take the meds at night if that will help with that?  I am the breadwinner for our family right now and I have to be able to work everyday. Hmmm.  On the plus side, I drink my coffee black!

Hugs to everyone!

I take my meds at night, so IDK if it helps or not. I know it does help me with my other side effects. I say go with what you're gut is telling you.

Good luck on the weaning. That is so hard to do physically and emotionally.

Hey, soup can be very good for you. I think it's the best thing for me right now. You can make it in the crock pot during the week. Or you can make a ton on the weekend. You can freeze part of it for later. Our Farmer's Markets already have a ton of great veg for sale because we forgot to have winter. The produce from there tastes better. And I love using interesting veg, like orange or purple cauliflower.

I just got a ham bone today to make 16 bean soup this weekend!  I love making big pots of soup, stew or what my sons used to call "stoup" when they were teens - too thick to really be called soup but not a traditional stew either.  Since they freeze well, I like to keep more than one type in the freezer for those times I don't feel like cooking.  Yum 8)  ...Islandgirl

Ok, so I know this has nothing to do with the treatment, but everything to do with my journey. Counting down. Last night was the last night for breastfeeding my son. I watched him nurse and I am so grateful to have nurse him this long, but heartbroken to stop him before he is ready on his own. I know it seems silly, but I could use some words of encouragement from the mamas out there.

I plan to take my first pill this Friday after dinner. I have been fighting my insurance company so long for this it almost seems that the whole ordeal should be over now. But now I have to actually take the pill. For twelve weeks. And what I  really stressing about as well is that the pamphlet they came with said don't be around sick people. Well, guess what I do for a living?  I work in a nursing home. Oh the irony.

Anyhow, how is everyone doing?!

Aw breadwinner!!! I know how your feeling it's an adjustment for both baby and yourself! It's a special bond between mother and child but that won't be lost!! And what you are doing in place of that is still giving him nutrients and love! It's time to take care of you! So you can be healthy and live a long fulfilled life for your baby! It is not silly at all completly normal!

I completly understand the feelings of after fighting for so long to get the meds that now it's all here and it's almost like frightening! It was for me anyways! I didn't dleep the night before my first dose and so much anxiety leading up to it, but I am happy to say I am on day 6 and doing great! Still able to keep up with the kids and I don't have any side effects really. You will do great!! Staying away from sick people is nearly impossible. Just take extra care wash your hands lots and keep hydrated eat healthy to boost up the immune system that's all we really can do. My oldest daughter is in school and she is like a germ pool! Lol we just battles a horrible cold that circles between all three kids my husband and myself for a month!! It's going to happen we can't avoid everything!

Best of luck to you breadwinner! We will cure ourselves so we can be healthy finally! No more worrying :)

Oh, breadwinner, it's so hard to stop breastfeeding. You gave him 9 months which is much longer than most. You did great!  The most important thing is to get rid of this nasty invader so you can be around for all your grandkids. Keep your thoughts on that big picture-you'll have health and energy to do things with your kids and grandkids!

For being around your patients, wear a mask. I've seen several do that at my grandma's nursing home. My BFF has breast cancer and is in school for respiratory therapy. The two days a week she's with patients, she wears a mask the whole time. If anyone asks, just say you couldn't get the flu shot because of allergies to the ingredients, so you have to wear the mask to protect them.

I am scheduled to starty first pill Friday after dinner, but I'm so antsy and ready to get this over with. My son has taken so far so good to weaning. I may just take the 1st pill tonight after dinner. How has everyone done with their first day?  I I take it tonight will work suck tomorrow?  Or do you think I should just be patient and wait until Friday like I originally planned.

Thank you guys for all of your responses. I feel like I am the biggest baby right now.

My first day and all days following have been fine. No change to routine and kids functions etc. I would stick to the plan but that's me! I take my pill at 9:30 am and my doctor told me to take in the morning so I have and like I say have had. I problems this is day 9. I had so much anxiety the day before and the day of I think it's normal to be scared of the unknown! Glad to hear babe made the adjustment no problem! You will be just fine! :)

I started Harvoni last Thursday and so far so good! Only side effect I've noticed is bloody nose, which my doctor never mentioned nor was in the Harvoni pamphlet as a side effect. Although I did read it on another thread on here.
Why do we need fiber and lots of water? My doctor told me water to combat headache side effect, but is that all? I am on a fluid restricted diet due to heart issues (unrelated to my Hep C), so I can only take in 1 liter a day. As for the fiber, does Harvoni cause constipation? I thought a side effect was diarrhea?
Wishing all of us good health and healing with Harvoni!! :)

As you have additional conditions I would ask your doctor about appropriate water intake for you I would think you want to drink your recommended amount per your health care provider.

Yours was the first mention of fiber I had seen. People here have had either symptom constipation or diarrhea. Listen to your body if you stat getting backed up then up your fiber as needed.

Good luck on treatment

Momof3: I'm so sorry I didn't see your reply!  I just happened to go on here and see that you wrote something!  I'm feeling ok. I've had a few headaches. Struggled with fatigue, but I hve a baby and a now 3yr old at home. I've been crazy busy. I have an extremely active job and I've been able to participate actively. I just feel bad because by the time I get home I am wiped out and I'm struggling to have energy with my family - which is where I think my side effects truly come from. Over exertion. I have those things, but truly I feel that I am doing great!  I have nothing to complain about. It's a cake walk so far compared to the previous treatments. I had my first blood draw Tuesday AND I did not pass out!  Yay for small victories - they keep the smelling salts out for me. Lol. How are you doing momof3?  How is everyone else doing?!!.

Yay for small victories indeed! I don't know how you do it working and the kids regardless of treatment lol I stayed home after baby #2. The kids drain me lol my 9 month old has been sick with a cold from the 2 year old so long nights!! Other than the usual. Itching more to report! My oldest is on spring break so we have been out and about trying to sleep in. I just had my week 4 bloodwork some and waiting on those results!! Very excited lol

Keep on fighting!!! Glad to hear things are going well!

My 4 week labs were good. CBC all well within normal range viral load came back at <15 detected... I was bummed as I was hoping for undetected but my doctors assured me this was fine and not to change course of treatment! So my faith is in them and the meds! I have 15 days left. I have had a stressful weak all te kids were sick and baby ended up with a night in hospital with a fever of 105 and pneumonia! Antibiitics kicked in and he's doing much better! I can't belive how fast treatment has gone!

How about you? Things going well on your end?

Wow, what a lot to go through all at once!  I'm so happy to hear everything is better today. Hang in there.  You must be exhausted. I've had a hard time because of lack of sleep from teething and a crazy threenager. I can't imagine how exhausted and relieved you must be.

Are you only doing 8 weeks of treatment?  I'm scheduled for twelve. I get my four week blood work tomorrow and I am crossing my fingers!
