So when it says "take with or shortly after food" ...

What exactly do you think that means? Is a piece of fruit "food"? A muesli bar? A handful of trail mix? Or do they mean something more substantial?

It depends. Which drug are you referring to?

The whole Viekira pak/ribivarin shebang. But particularly the sticker is on the Ombitasvir/ritonavir/paritaprevir combo. Not sure if it's specific to that tablet or the whole cocktail though.

Per my ProCeed nurse 'take with food' means any type of food not the amount. Even crackers to get digestion started because our meds start working in the stomach. I usually go with meals breakfast and dinner because it is easiest and use crackers in a pinch.

Food first can also help prevent nausea.

This is from the labeling info: ...take with a meal without regard to fat or
calorie content.

If you want more detail:
Relative to fasting conditions, administration of ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir with a moderate fat meal (approximately 600 Kcal, 20-30% calories from fat) increased the mean AUC by 82%, 211%, 49%, and 30%, respectively.
Relative to fasting conditions, administration of ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir with a high fat meal (approximately 900 Kcal, 60% calories from fat) increased the mean AUC by 76%, 180%, 44%, and 22%, respectively.
Ombitasvir, paritaprevir, ritonavir, and dasabuvir should always be administered with a meal.

AUC is Area Under the Curve, and it basically means how much drug is available to the body. When I read this, my inner voice tells me to take my pills with an ordinary meal that has no more than 30% fat, since my body doesn't need any extra fat, and the AUC is hearty at that percentage.

Lucinda, what about Harvoni? I take it with my other meds on an empty stomach, drink 4 oz of what or so and eat 30 mins later. Is that the right regimen?

Atomic Dog - Harvoni can be taken with or without food - it doesn't matter. Some docs are suggesting not taking it with grapefruit, but I have not seen any data on this.
