Second month on Harvoni
« on: April 07, 2015, 12:10:48 am »
I've been on Harvoni for over 3 weeks now.  Tomorrow I'll be getting some lab work done to determine my progress.  Next Friday, 9 Apr, I start my second month on Harvoni and hopefully I can kick this in the butt.  I will post my latest lab results as soon as I get them.  It's not over, 'til it's over.  Good luck to everyone and God bless.

Thanks for the good vibes Else. I drank lots and lots of water and my second set of lab results showed everything in normal range. Also, my hep c is undetected and my viral load is 3000. However, my Dr wants labs every week now since renal failure is the biggest problem with taking Harvoni. I thank God that everything looked OK and I can continue taking Harvoni. :)

I didn't know that renal failure was a significant risk with Harvoni.  Ack.  And just when I thought I'd read everything.  :(

I haven't seen any issues with renal impairment from Harvoni just if you already have renal problems you have to be cautious

http://www.gilead.com/~/media/Files/pdfs/medicines/liver-disease/harvoni/harvoni_pi.pdf

From the prescribing information for Harvoni about use in specific populations

8.6 Renal Impairment
No dosage adjustment of HARVONI is required for patients with mild or moderate renal impairment. The safety and efficacy of HARVONI have not been established in patients with severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73m2) or ESRD requiring hemodialysis. No dosage recommendation can be given for patients with severe renal impairment or ESRD [see Dosage and Administration (2.2) and Clinical Pharmacology (12.3)].

I don't have kidney problems. When my white blood count was so high, my kidney panel wasn't normal and my GI Dr said that renal failure was the downfall from taking Harvoni so I was just posting what she said. Anyway, all my functions are normal again, so all is good

Glad to hear your results are normal now

I have a friend who has kidney disease and hep c and looking at treatment. I personally don't know much about that issue and wish I did for my friend.

I haven't seen anything about Harvoni being a specific problem do you have any info about that where to look up that information?

Thanks

No Lynn, sorry I don't. Like I said, I was repeating what my GI Dr told me. Make sure your friend researches it thoroughly before starting Harvoni, and best of luck.

It looks like cardiac issues/meds are the only well-documented contraindications.  But it's a new drug.  The volume of post-FDA approval events is bound to increase.

Having said that, I still wish I could start it tomorrow.  This waiting game is driving me nuts.  The "staging priorities" policy of my insurance company is so damn perverse.  They want to see proof of major organ damage before authorizing treatment.

Still shaking my head in disbelief.  Can you imagine if they pulled this with any other disease?  Required a diabetic to go blind or an epileptic to have x number of documented seizures?  Freakin' medieval it is.  >:(
